FSSAI slashes limit for trans fat levels in foods

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has capped the amount of trans fatty acids (TFA) in oils and fats to 3% for 2021 and 2% by 2022 from the current permissible limit of 5%.
  • This Regulation through an amendment to the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulations.
  • The revised regulation applies to edible refined oils, vanaspati (partially hydrogenated oils), margarine, bakery shortenings, and other mediums of cooking such as vegetable fat spreads and mixed fat spreads.
  • India first passed the TFA limit of 10% in oils and fats in 2011.

Government Extends Income Tax Returns Filing Date To January 10

  • The government extended the deadline to file income tax return (ITR) for individuals by 10 days to January 10, 2021.
  • Prior to that the deadline was December 31, 2020
  • This is the third time that the government has extended the deadline to file ITR  first from the normal deadline of July 31 to November 30, 2020, and then to December 31, 2020.
  • The last date for filing ITR has been extended for those taxpayers whose filings using ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms are not required to be audited.

Uttarakhand: India’s first pollinator park comes up at Haldwani

  • The country’s first pollinator park with over 40 species of butterflies, honey bees, birds and insects has been developed over four acres at Nainital’s Haldwani.
  • Developed by the research wing of the Uttarakhand Forest Department, the colourful park was inaugurated by renowned butterfly expert Peter Smetacek.
  • Objective of the Park : The objective behind developing the park is to conserve various pollinator species, create awareness among people in general about the importance of conservation of these species and to promote further research on various aspects of pollination, including threat to habitat and impact of pollution on pollinators.
  • There are at present 40 species of pollinators at the park.

PM Modi dedicates to nation section of Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor in UP

  • On December 29, 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation the ambitious New Bhaupur-New Khurja section of Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor in Uttar Pradesh through video conference.
  • Governor of Uttar Pradesh Anandiben Patel also attended the function through video conferencing.
  • The 351-kilometre New Bhaupur- New Khurja section of EDFC is built at a cost of 5,750 crore and most of its part passes through Uttar Pradesh.
  • The section will decongest the existing Kanpur-Delhi main line and will enable Indian Railways to run faster trains.
  • The Prime Minister also inaugurated Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor’s Operation Control Centre at Prayagraj.
  • This will act as the command centre for the entire route length of the EDFC.

  • This would help in rehabilitating all manual scavengers and replace insanitary with sanitary ones.
  • As per the 2011 census, insanitary latrines is the main reason for manual scavenging.

  • Road Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that FASTag is being made mandatory for all vehicles in the country from new year.
  • FASTag will be enforced from 1st of January, 2021. Enumerating its benefits,it is useful for the commuters as they will not need to stop at toll plazas for cash payments.
