RBI imposes monetary penalty on 4 co-operative banks

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed monetary penalties on 4 cooperative banks for deficiencies in regulatory compliance.

List of 4 cooperative banks :

  1. The Becharaji Nagarik Sahakari Bank Limited., located in Mehsana, Gujarat, has been penalised ₹2.00 lakh.
  2. The Waghodia Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd., located in Vadodara, Gujarat, faces a penalty of ₹5.00 lakh.
  3. The Viramgam Mercantile Co-operative Bank Ltd., situated in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is also penalised ₹5.00 lakh.
  4. The Baramati Sahakari Bank Ltd., based in Baramati, Pune,Maharashtra has received a penalty of ₹2.00 lakh.

Reasons for Penalties :

  • Becharaji Nagarik Sahakari Bank Ltd. faced penalties for non-compliance with RBI’s directions regarding the ‘Placement of Deposits with Other Banks by Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs)’ and breaching the prudential interbank counterparty exposure limit.
  • The Waghodia Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd. received penalties for non-compliance with directions related to ‘Loans and advances to directors, relatives, and firms or concerns in which they are interested,’ as well as ‘Placement of Deposits with Other Banks by Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs)’ among others.
  • The Viramgam Mercantile Co-operative Bank Ltd. was penalised for non-compliance with directions on ‘Loans and Advances to directors etc. – directors as surety or guarantors – Clarification,’ ‘Placement of Deposits with Other Banks by Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs),’ and specific directions issued by RBI under the Supervisory Action Framework (SAF).
  • The Baramati Sahakari Bank Ltd. faced penalties for non-compliance with RBI’s directions related to the ‘Maintenance of Deposit Accounts – Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks’ as it had not credited interest to inoperative saving bank accounts.

LIC Hands Over ₹1,831 Crore Dividend Cheque to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

  • The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) presented a dividend cheque of Rs 1,831.09 crore to Finance Minister (FM) Smt Nirmala Sitharaman.
  • The dividend payment was approved by LIC shareholders at the Annual General Meeting held on August 22, 2023.
  • This dividend amount represents the Centre’s share of the dividend for the fiscal year 2022-23.
  • As of June 2023, the Centre held an equity stake of 96.5% in LIC.
  • In May 2022, LIC, which is the country’s largest insurer, launched its mega ₹21,000 crore initial public offering (IPO).

Government rolls out UPAg, a unified portal for agri statistics

  • The Centre launched a unified portal for agricultural statistics and named it as UPAg (Unified Portal for Agricultural Statistics) and termed it as a groundbreaking move to address the complex governance challenges India’s farm sector is facing now.
  • The portal will empower stakeholders with real-time, reliable, and standardized information, paving the way for more responsive and efficient agricultural policies.
  • Agriculture Secretary Manoj Ahuja claimed that the UPAg portal will help users to have access to credible, granular and objective data.
  • Unified Portal for Agricultural Statistics developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (DA & FW) was launched by NITI Aayog members.

All reported births, and deaths to be digitally registered from October 1, 2023

  • According to a government notificationall reported births and deaths in the country will be digitally registered on the Centre’s portal from October 1.
  • The Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023 paves way for digital birth certificates
  • It will be a single document to be used for admission to educational institutions, applications for driving licenses, government jobs, passports or Aadhaar, voter enrolment, and registration of marriage, among others.
  • The centralized database will also update the National Population Register (NPR), ration cards, property registration and electoral rolls.
  • It will be compulsory for States to register births and deaths on the Centre’s Civil Registration System (CRS) portal and share data with the Registrar General of India (RGI).

UNDP India Collaborates with NABARD to Promote Data-Driven Agricultural Innovations      

  • The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) have signed a 5-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Aim :

  • To co-create data-driven digital public goods, including DiCRA (Data in Climate Resilient Agriculture), with a focus on building sustainable agricultural practices and securing livelihoods, especially for small farmholders, including women.
  • The MoU was signed by Sanjeev Rohilla, Chief General Manager of NABARD, and Ms. Isabelle Tschan, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative.

Key Highlights :

  • Under this MoU, both organisations will collaborate to improve the lives and livelihoods of smallholder farmers by sharing open-source data for product development, technology transfer, and supporting the formulation of agrarian policies.
  • UNDP will leverage its expertise in open innovations, data collaboratives, data science approaches, and global knowledge to support NABARD’s agenda of promoting data-driven decision-making in agriculture investments.

Nobel Foundation announced winners of this year’s Nobel Prizes to get extra one million crowns

  • The Nobel Foundation has announced that the winners of this year’s Nobel Prizes will get an extra one million crowns.
  • This means that the 2023 laureates will receive a total financial reward of 11 million Swedish crowns which is equivalent to around 986,000 dollars (8.1 crore rupees).
  • This increase has made this year’s cash award the most valuable, to be handed out in the more than 100-year history of the Nobel Prize.
  • The prize money has been adjusted up and down in recent years.
  • In 2012, the foundation reduced the prize money from 10 million crowns to 8 million in order to strengthen its finances.
  • However, the award money was gradually increased back to 10 million crowns towards the end of the decade.
  • According to the award-givers, a further increase in the amount this year reflects the Foundation’s stronger financial position.
  • This year’s Nobel Prize winners will be announced next month.
  • The laureates will then be invited to receive their awards at prize ceremonies on the 10th of December, which is the anniversary of award founder Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896.
  • The prestigious Peace Prize is handed out in Oslo, while the other award ceremonies are held in Stockholm.

Global debt declined to $235 trillion in 2022 but stayed above pre-Covid level: IMF

  • The global debt burden retreated for the second year in a row, even though it remains above its already-high pre-pandemic level, according to the latest update of the IMF Global Debt Database.
  • The total debt stood at 238 per cent of global gross domestic product last year, 9 percentage points higher than in 2019.
  • In US dollar terms, debt amounted to $235 trillion, or $200 billion above its level in 2021.
  • Even then, the decline was not enough to erase the pandemic surge.
  • Before the pandemic, global debt-to-GDP ratios had risen for decades.
  • Global public debt tripled since the mid-1970s to reach 92 per cent of GDP (or just above $91 trillion) by end-2022.
  • China played a central role in increasing global debt in recent decades as borrowing outpaced economic growth.
  • Debt as a share of GDP has risen to about the same level as in the United States, while in dollar terms China’s total debt ($47.5 trillion) is still markedly below that of the United States (close to $70 trillion).
  • As for non-financial corporate debt, China’s 28share is the largest in the world.

REC extends Rs. 6,075 crore loan to Greenko for setting up 1,440 MW Pumped Storage Project

  • REC Limited has sanctioned Rs. 6,075 Crore loan to renewable energy company Greenko for setting up a 1,440 MW Standalone Pumped Storage Project.
  • The country’s premier NBFC-IFC is also in advanced discussions with Greenko and is poised to extend financial support for multiple clean energy projects.
  • The National Electricity Plan of the Central Electricity Authority estimates an overall Renewable installed capacity growth of around 4 times between FY 2022 and FY 2032 (~7 times under Solar, ~5.5 times under Pumped Storage Project, ~3 times under Wind).
  • These projections, coupled with global thrust and national commitments under Renewables, will not just present a business opportunity for REC but will also allow the company to contribute to nation building by leading the green financing vertical.

Indian Air Force Receives Its 1st C-295 Aircraft from Airbus in Spain           

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) has received the first C-295MW transport aircraft from Airbus in Seville, Spain.
  • The IAF has ordered a total of 56 C-295MW aircraft under a project valued at ₹21,935 crores.

About C-295MW :

  • The C-295MW is a transport aircraft with a capacity of 5-10 tonnes.
  • The new C-295MW aircraft will replace the legacy Avro aircraft in the Indian Air Force, which were procured in the 1960s.
  • Under the contract, 16 aircraft will be delivered in fly-away condition from Seville, while the remaining 40 will be manufactured by Airbus in partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. (TASL).
  • The C-295MW aircraft has a flight endurance of up to 11 hours and can carry out multi-role operations under all weather conditions.

Air India enters interline partnership with Bangkok Airways

  • As part of its effort to expand its global network, Air India has entered into an interline partnership with Bangkok Airways in order to provide greater connectivity within Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia.
  • The agreement comprises seamless connections via Air India’s Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore gateways to and from 10 destinations in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia on Bangkok Airways’ route network as well as complimentary lounge access at available airports regardless of cabin class.
  • In addition to the Bangkok gateway, Air India passengers can also choose to fly to Koh Samui via Singapore and Hong Kong.
  • The scope of the agreement between the two airlines includes Inter Airline Through Check-In (IATCI) implementation, which enables guests to receive their boarding passes at the first point of departure for all the travel sectors on a single ticket, and have their baggage checked in through to their final destinations.

India ranks first in grassroots crypto adoption

  • India has been ranked first in grassroots crypto adoption, even amid a tough regulatory environment, according to Chainalysis’ 2023 Global Crypto Adoption Index.
  • The country ranked first in four parameters including centralized service value received, retail centralized service value received, DeFi value received and Retail DeFi value received.
  • In 2022, India stood fourth, based on the report.
  • The report combines on-chain data and real-world data to measure which countries are leading the world in grassroots crypto adoption.
  • Grassroots crypto adoption isn’t about which countries have the highest raw transaction volumes, Instead, it’s the countries where average, everyday people are embracing crypto the most.
  • Nigeria ranked second in the index, followed by Vietnam, United States and Ukraine.
  • The report also said that low-income countries saw a dramatic uptick in crypto adoption following a slump in late 2022, spurred by the collapse of the FTX.
  • With 30% tax on gains, India has also introduced a 1% TDS on crypto trades, thus harming the trade volumes.
  • However, India is also advocating for worldwide crypto legislation, most recently at the G20 Summit hosted by the country.
