RBI Partners with GFIN to tackle Greenwashing in financial services

  • The Global Financial Innovation Network (GFIN) is organising its first-ever Greenwashing TechSprint to combat greenwashing risks in financial services.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced its participation among 12 other international regulators in this initiative to develop a tool that helps the market and regulators address the issue.
  • RBI noted the number of investment products marketed as ‘green’ was growing.

Key Highlights :

  • Greenwashing risks in financial services refer to the practice of making exaggerated, misleading, or false claims about the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) characteristics of investment products or services.
  • This is done to attract investors who are interested in sustainable or responsible investing, but can ultimately result in harm to the environment or society.
  • The companies that were selected for the Greenwashing TechSprint will proceed through to on-boarding, which will take place on 1st and 2nd of June, 2023.
  • This will provide firms with training on the Digital Sandbox and an in-depth overview of the TechSprint process.
  • The TechSprint will launch on June 5, 2023 and will run for 3 months, ending with a showcase day in September 2023.

ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Launches new debt fund ICICI Pru Constant Maturity Fund

  • ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Limited launched a new debt fund called ICICI Pru Constant Maturity Fund; it is available with the insurer’s Unit-linked insurance plans (ULIP).
  • This will enable customers to lock-in their investments at current high interest rates, build long-term wealth and achieve financial goals.
  • ICICI Pru Constant Maturity Fund is the first such fund in the life insurance market.

How to invest in the fund?

  • Customers have the option of investing in this fund through the company’s ULIP offerings like ICICI Pru Signature, ICICI Pru Smart Life, and ICICI Pru LifeTime Classic.
  • Customers can reach out to their advisors or visit the company website to buy these plans.

  • ULIPs provide customers with a proposition of life cover, financial security to the family and facilitate building wealth over the long-term.
  • Investments in ULIPs provide tax benefits.

SEBI Fines Rs 1.9 Crore On 4 Former Officials Of Karvy Group

  • Capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) imposed a penalty totalling Rs 1.9 crore on 4 former officials of Karvy Group for flouting norms in the case pertaining to misappropriation of clients’ funds by Karvy Stock Broking Ltd (KSBL).
  • Those penalised by SEBI are Krishna Hari G, who was Vice PresidentP (F&A) of KSBL; Srikrishna Gurazada, former compliance officer of KSBL; Srinivasa Raju, who was the General Manager- back office operations; and V Mahesh, who was the CEO of Karvy Data Management Services Limited (KDMSL).
  • Accordingly, SEBI has levied a fine of Rs 1 crore on Krishna Hari G, Rs 40 lakhs on Raju, Rs 30 lakh on Gurazada, and Rs 20 lakhs on Mahesh.

Key Highlights :

  • According to the order passed by the SEBI, they have been directed to pay the fine within 45 days.
  • The order came after SEBI initiated adjudication proceedings against the key persons of KSBL, who allegedly contributed/colluded with the brokerage house in its wrongdoings.
  • In April 2023, SEBI in its final order, had barred KSBL and its promoter Comandur Parthasarathy from the securities market for 7 years and imposed a penalty of Rs 21 crore on them for misappropriating clients’ funds by misusing the Power of Attorney given to it.

IRDAI forms 5 member expert panel for advice on mental health cover  

  • India’s Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI) has set up a five-member expert committee to advise it on subjects related to mental health and insurance.
  • The Committee chaired by National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) director Pratima Murthy, includes medical experts and insurers as its members.

Key Highlights :

  • The committee will remain effective for 2 years & provide advice on current and future coverages on mental illnesses.
  • It will also help with the terminology, concept and different aspects from the point of view of the medical domain.
  • In addition, various aspects associated with mental illnesses from an insurance perspective will be provided.
  • The committee has been formed in the wake of the growing importance of mental health as a vital area for insurance coverage.

SEBI tweaks mutual fund investment framework in minors’ names through guardians

  • Capital markets regulator Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) tweaked the rules about investment in mutual funds made in the name of a minor through a guardian.
  • SEBI has asked all Asset Management Companies (AMCs) to make the necessary changes to facilitate such mutual fund transactions with effect from June 15, 2023.

Key Highlights :

  • Under the new rule, payment for investment in mutual funds by any mode will be accepted from the bank account of the minor, parent or legal guardian of the minor, or a joint account of the minor with parent or legal guardian.
  • For existing mutual fund folios, the AMCs will have to insist upon a change of pay-out bank mandate before redemption is processed.
  • In December 2019, SEBI prescribed the uniform process to be followed by AMCs in case of investments made in the name of a minor through a guardian.
  • When opening a mutual fund account for a minor, the minor should be the only account holder.
  • There can’t be any joint account.
  • The guardian opening the account should be the child’s natural parent or a court-appointed legal guardian.
  • To change the status of the account from minor to major, the adult must submit a minor attaining majority mutual fund request form (MAM form) and provide documents such as a permanent account number (PAN), KYC form, cancelled cheque, and signature attestation.

Smriti Irani launches “Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi” campaign

  • Union Minister Smriti Irani launched the ‘Poshan Bhi, Padhai Bhi’ scheme.
  • The main aim of the ‘Poshan Bhi, Padhai Bhi’ scheme is to strengthen Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE).
  • ‘Poshan Bhi, Padhai Bhi’ scheme will help in making world’s largest, universal, high-quality preschool network in India.
  • Its main target is the overall development of children in every domain that is mentioned in the National Curriculum Framework.
  • It will help in the physical and motor development, cogniti ve development, and socio-emotional-ethical development of children.
  • EECE is the main component of Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 (Mission Poshan 2.0).
  • Union Minister Smriti Irani said that the government is trying to upgrade more than 117,000 mini-Anganwadi centers into full-fledged centres.
  • 39 million operational Anganwadi centers across India are providing supplementary nutrition and early care and education to around 80 million children.
  • The Ministry has allocated Rs 600 crore for the training of Anganwadi Workers (AWW) to effectively implement ECCE.
  • The National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) will provide the training for anganwadi workers.
  • The objective of the program is to transform anganwadi centers into not just nutrition hubs but also education-imparting centers.
  • Through the changes introduced by the “Poshan bhi, Padhai bhi” ECCE policy, every child would be provided with at least two hours of high-quality pre-school instruction daily.
  • All States will follow the national ECCE task force recommendations for a play-based, activity-based learning pedagogy, targeted specifically at developmental milestones of 0-3-year-olds as well as 3-6-year-olds, including special support for Divyang children

NeGD organises 36th CISO Deep-Dive Training Programme Under Cyber Surakshit Bharat

  • 36th Chief Information Security Officer Deep-Dive Training program organized by National e-Governance Division (NeGD).
  • The program is being organized Under Cyber Surakshit Bharat from 8 th to 12th May 2023.
  • It is being organised at the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi, and 24 participants from Central Ministries, States, and Union Territories are participating in the exercise.
  • The five-day intensive training program is designed for designated CISOs from Central and State/UT Governments, Subordinate Agencies/PSUs.
  • In addition, the training program also covered officers who are deputed to oversee the security of Information Technology systems in their respective organizations.

Shri Sarbananda Sonowal launches Harit Sagar Green Port Guidelines to Achieve Zero Carbon Emission Goal

  • Harit Sagar” the Green Port Guidelines 2023 has been launched by Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal at a function in New Delhi.
  • The Guidelines envisage enhancing the ecosystem performance in port development, operation and maintenance with the concept of ‘working with nature’ and minimizing the impact on the biotic components of the port ecosystem.
  • It covers key points of the National Green Hydrogen Mission related to ports, development of green hydrogen facility, storage of LNG, harnessing of onshore wind energy etc. and provides opportunity for adoption of Green Reporting Initiative (GRI) standard.
  • Cochin Port has bagged Sagar Shreshta Award of Ministry of Ports Shipping & Waterways for best performance among all Indian Major Ports for best turnaround time in non-container port category, during the year 2022-23.
  • Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has given the award to M. Beena, Chairperson, Cochin Port Authority at a function held in New Delhi.
  • The award is in recognition of the excellent performance of Cochin Port in handling dry bulk and liquid bulk cargo vessels.
  • The Best Absolute Performance Award for the year 2022-23 has been awarded to Deendayal Port, Kandla for handling the highest ever cargo of 137.56 MMT.

Ministry of Power & Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change to develop Carbon Credit Trading Scheme for Decarbonisation

  • national framework will be set up with the aim of decarbonizing the Indian economy by pricing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions through the trading of Carbon Credit Certificates.
  • For this purposethe Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change are jointly developing a carbon credit trading scheme.
  • ‘Stakeholder Consultation on Accredited Carbon Verifiers under ICM’ was organized in New Delhi.
  • The event was organized with participants from key stakeholders including Accredited Energy Auditors, Carbon/Energy Verifiers, Sector Experts.
  • As India currently has an energy savings-based market mechanism, the new avatar Carbon Credit Trading Scheme will enhance energy transmission efforts with an enhanced scope that will cover potential energy sectors in India.
  • For these sectors, GHG emissions intensity benchmarks and targets will be developed, which will be aligned with India’s emissions graph against climate targets.
  • Carbon credits will be traded based on the performance of this regional graph.
  • In addition, it is envisaged that a voluntary mechanism will concurrently develop to encourage GHG reductions from non-obligatory areas.
  • India has been at the forefront of climate action to meet climate goals through its ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
  • The government is developing the ICM to facilitate the achievement of India’s enhanced climate targets and to meet future targets.
  • ICM will help achieve the NDC target of reducing the emissions intensity of GDP by 45 percent by 2030 relative to 2005 levels by accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy.

6th Indian Ocean Conference to begin  in Dhaka

  • The 6th Indian Ocean Conference (IOC) is being hosted by Bangladesh and is being held in Dhaka.
  • High-level government delegations and think tanks from around 25 countries are expected to participate in the IOC.
  • The conference was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
  • Aspects of strengthening cooperation among the countries of the Indian Ocean region were discussed in the meeting.
  • About 150 foreign guests are participating in the conference, including representatives from D8, SAARC and BIMSTEC.
  • India Foundation in association with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh and S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies are organising the 6th edition of the Conference.
  • The Conference endeavours to bring critical states and principal maritime partners of the region together on a common platform to deliberate upon the prospects of regional cooperation for Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).

  • Madhya Pradesh (MP) Chief Minister (CM) Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated a Gau-raksha Sankalp Sammelan (Cow-Protection Resolution Conference) and flagged off 406 veterinary ambulances under the ‘Pashu Chikitsa Ambulance’ (animal ambulance) scheme at Lal Parade ground in Bhopal, MP.
  • toll free number ‘1962’ has been issued for the treatment of animals during an emergency.”
  • A monthly aid of Rs 900 will be given to the farmers for rearing cows who will be doing natural farming.
  • The instalment of the scheme will be issued to 22,000 farmers this month.
  • Tribal people will be provided 90% subsidy on buying cows for cow rearing.

India’s retail inflation eases to a 18-month low of 4.7% in April

  • India’s annual retail inflation eased to a 18-month low of 4.7% in April from 5.66 per cent the previous month.
  • The retail inflation was below the Reserve Bank of Ind ia’s upper tolerance limit for the second straight month.
  • Reserve Bank of India has projected the CPI inflation at 5.2 per cent for FY2023-24, with 5.1 per cent in Q1, 5.4 per cent in Q2, 5.4 per cent in Q3, and 5.2 per cent in Q4, and risks evenly balanced.

Delhi government’s draft Motor Vehicle Aggregator Scheme to allow only e-bikes as bike taxis and delivery service providers

  • The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) announced the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Scheme 2023, which is aimed at regulating cab aggregators and delivery service providers.
  • A draft of the scheme was approved by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, which will now be sent to the Delhi LG.
  • This scheme prioritises the safety of passengers and ensures timely grievance redressal, while also promoting the use of electric vehicles (EVs) and reducing pollution levels in the city.
  • The scheme follows a ‘polluter pays’ principle, which will make the per vehicle licence fee for a conventional vehicle significantly higher than an EV.
  • The scheme will also mark a historic first for the nation where a state government will be introducing a mandatory transition of commercial vehicles from conventional vehicles to electric vehicles.
  • The Aggregator and Delivery service provider shall also be mandated to switch to an all electric fleet by April 1, 2030.
  • The scheme will make it mandatory for aggregators to install a panic button and integration with 112 (Delhi Police) for emergencies.

Hyundai signs 20000-cr investment pact with Tamil Nadu

  • Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) is preparing for an expansion in the electric vehicle (EV) segment and ramping up its production.
  • To this effect, the company has signed an agreement with the Tamil Nadu government for a large-scale investment of 20,000 crore to be spent over 10 years (2023-2032).
  • The proposed investment will be spent in establishing an EV battery pack assembly unit, the development of new vehicle platforms (such as EVs) and new models (Internal Combustion Engine and EV), and the ramp up of production capacity, among others.
  • The company will also be investing in increasing the the production capacity at its Sriperumbudur factory near Chennai, to 8.5 lakh units per year from the current 7.7 lakh units.
  • Hyundai Motor India Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Hyundai Motor Company headquartered in South Korea.

India leads list of 10 countries with 60% of global maternal deaths, stillbirths, newborn deaths: UN

  • According to a United Nations report, India is leading the list of 10 counties that together account for 60 per cent of global maternal deaths, stillbirths and newborn deaths, and 51 per cent of live births globally.
  • This report has been released at the ongoing ‘International Maternal Newborn Health Conference’ (IMNHC 2023).
  • As per the report, 4.5 million deaths — maternal deaths (0.29 million), stillbirths (1.9 million) and newborn deaths (2.3 million) occurred in 2020-21.
  • According to the first-ever joint Every Newborn action Plan (ENAP) and Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality (EPMM) progress tracking report, global progress has slowed in deaths of pregnant women, mothers and babies in the last eight years.
  • The largest number of newborn and maternal deaths has been witnessed in Sub-Saharan Africa and Central and Southern Asia regions.
  • In 2020, 7,88,000 maternal deaths, stillbirths and neonatal deaths occurred in India.
  • India is followed by Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and China.
  • India is responsible for 17 per cent of global live births which could be a factor for the large number of maternal deaths, stillbirths and neonatal deaths.

ICMR and AYUSH to work together to boost Ayurveda’s identity based on scientific evidence

  • Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Ministry of AYUSH have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA).
  • MoA is to enhance collaboration and cooperation in health research in the field of Integrated Medicin
  • K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog said, this step will help Ayush departments in AIIMS evolve into departments of Integrative Medicine.
  • Integrative Health Research is a transdisciplinary, holistic approach in which the benefits of co-administering conventional and non-conventional medical practices are investigated.
  • Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that ICMR and AYUSH will work together to boost Ayurveda’s identity based on scientific evidence.
  • A joint working group will be created between the Ministry of AYUSH and ICMR.
  • The joint working group will meet quarterly for exploring further areas of collaboration.
  • Both organisations will also work towards developing mutual cooperation for facilitating scientific validation and providing evidence for AYUSH systems.

  • Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Praveen Sood will become the next head of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
  • He has been appointed to the post for a period of 2 years from the date of assuming charge after outgoing CBI chief Subodh Kumar Jaiswal completes his tenure on May 25, 2023.

INS Hansa becomes First Defence Airfield with RNP Approach based on Gagan Indian Satellite system 

  • Goa-based Indian Naval Ship (INS) Hansa has become the first Joint-User International Aerodrome in the South-Asia Pacific region to be augmented with the Required Navigation Performance (RNP) approach.
  • The RNP approach will reduce dependency for navigation on ground-based equipment such as Very-High Frequency Omnidirectional Radio (VOR) and Instrument Landing System (ILS).
  • This naval air station has grown to become a full-fledged airfield that handles domestic and international flights around the clock.
  • A team of AAI officials visited the Air Station between April 7-8, 2022, towards formulation of Letters of Agreement (LOA) between INS Hansa and Manohar International Airport

  • INS Hansa is an Indian naval air station located near Dabolim in Goa, India.

  • The 4th edition of India-Indonesia Bilateral Naval exercise Samudra Shakti-23 between the Indian Navy & the Indonesian Navy was held at Batam, Indonesia from 14-19 May 2023.

  • Samudra Shakti commenced between the Indian Navy & Indonesian Navy in 2018.
  • The 3rd edition of Samudra Shakti exercise was held in September 2021 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

About Samudra Shakti -23 :

  • Samudra Shakti -23 will showcase the high level of interoperability between the two navies and their shared commitment towards peace and stability in the region.
  • The exercise consists of two phase – Harphour phase & Sea phase
  • The Harbour phase will comprise Cross deck visits, professional Interactions, Subject Matter Expert Exchanges, and sports fixtures.
  • During the Sea Phase, weapon firing, Helicopter Operations, Anti-submarine warfare & air defence exercises and boarding operations are planned.
