City Union Bank rolls out credit card in partnership with 42 Card Solutions                              

  • Private sector lender City Union Bank (CUB) has launched its first-ever credit card service, the Dhi CUB Visa Signature Credit Card, in partnership with credit cards-as-a-service provider 42 Card Solutions Pvt Ltd (42 CS)

Key Highlights : 

  • The bank initially issued the cards to its employees in a trial run, and plans to have around 30,000 active cards by the end of March 2023.
  • The first priority to avail the new credit card will be given to CUB’s existing customers over new-to-credit customers.
  • Customers can apply for the card by logging into the bank’s mobile application, and can get 1.25% cashback on eligible spends.
  • The card also has a unique flex control option that enables its users to actively control and manage their spending while ensuring a high level of safety.
  • The bank will also offer a free CUB Keychain Debit Card to its credit card customers.

Kotak AMC financial literacy campaign for women – DigitALL                      

  • On International Women’s Day,March 08, 2023 Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company (Kotak Mutual Fund) has launched a digital campaign named ‘DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality,’.

Aim : 

  • To drive the culture of digital literacy among women.
  • The campaign advocates for digital inclusion of all with the hashtag #IncludeAll.

Centre begins survey of enemy properties across the country

  • Centre launched a first-of-its-kind National Survey of Enemy Properties.
  • The survey is being conducted on enemy properties spread across 20 states and 3 Union Territories.
  • The purpose of the survey is to identify and eventually monetize all enemy properties left by people who acquired Pakistani or Chinese citizenship after war with these nations.
  • The survey is being conducted by the Directorate General of Defence Estates (DGDE) and will assess the current condition and value of more than 12,000 properties recognised by the Office of Custodian of Enemy Property for India (CEPI).
  • Office of Custodian of Enemy Property for India (CEPI) is a statutory authority under the Ministry of Home Affairs which is empowered to appropriate property in India owned by Pakistani nationals.
  • It was transferred to Ministry of Home Affairs in 2007.
  • The survey of properties has started with properties in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Majority of enemy properties are located in Uttar Pradesh, followed by West Bengal and Delhi.
  • There have been cases of encroachment or false claims over the enemy properties therefore, the government has decided to fast track the process of monetising these properties.

About DGDE:

  • Post Indo-Pakistan war of 1965, the Enemy Property Act was promulgated in 1968.
  • Directorate General, Defence Estates (DGDE) is the headquarters of the Indian Defence Estates Service.
  • It provides advisory inputs on all Cantonments and Land matters to the Ministry of Defence and other organizations under Ministry of Defence.
  • It also ensures implementation of Cantonments Act 2006, Policies, Rules & Regulations and Executive instructions.

India to launch global alliance for big cats, invest $100 million

  • India recently proposed to launch International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) to protect big cats and assured support over five years with guaranteed funding of $100 million.
  • It is a proposed mega-global alliance that will work toward the protection and conservation of the seven major big cats — tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, puma, jaguar, and cheetah.
  • Membership to the alliance will be open to 97 ‘range’ countries, which contain the natural habitat of these big cats, as well as other interested nations, international organizations, etc.
  • The alliance’s purpose is to provide a platform for the dissemination of information on benchmarked practices, capacity building, resources repository, research and development, awareness creation, etc., on the protection and conservation of big cats.
  • After the first five years, which will be supported by India’s ‘total grant assistance’ of $100 million, the IBCA is expected to sustain itself through membership fees, and contributions from bilateral and multilateral institutions and the private sector.

Governance Structure:

  • A General Assembly consisting of all member countries.
  • A Council of at least seven but not more than 15 member countries elected by the General Assembly for a term of 5 years, and a Secretariat.
  • Upon the recommendation of the Council, the General Assembly will appoint the IBCA Secretary General for a specific term.

IIM Kashipur’s entrepreneurship event facilitates 5 crore funding for agri start-ups

  • IIM Kashipur’s Foundation for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development (FIED) has helped facilitate 5 crore funding for 15 agri start-ups at Uttishtha 2023, its annual entrepreneurship summit recently.
  • The initiative, supported by the Agriculture Ministry, aims to bring socio- economic value in Uttarakhand’s entrepreneur ecosystem by enabling the raw entrepreneurs to achieve their dreams.
  • Uttishtha 2023 also hosted over 100 start-ups and nearly 20 venture capitalists to exchange their interests.
  • FIED team has incubated over 140 start-ups, which have generated direct employment of over 1,200 and have impacted over half a million farmers.”

India’s per capita income doubles to Rs 1.72 lakh per annum since 2014-15

  • According to National Statistics Office (NSO) data, India’s per capita income has reached 72 lakhs in 2022-23 from 86,647 in 2014-15.
  • India’s per capita income has increased with a growth rate of 15.8%.
  • For the years 2020-21 and 2021-22, Per capita income at the current prices was estimated at ₹1,27,065 and ₹1,48,524 respectively.
  • After adjusting for inflation (constant prices), the per capita income has increased by 35 per cent from Rs 72,805 in 2014-15 to Rs 98,118 in 2022-23.
  • From 2014 to 2019, the average growth of India’s per-capita income was 5.6% per annum.
  • Health, Education, and Economic and Social mobility have seen improvements.
  • As per the NSO, the per capita income in both real and nominal terms have declined during the Covid period.
  • It has improved in the fiscal years 2021-22 and 2022-23.
  • India has become the world’s fifth-large economy by overtaking the United Kingdom.

Five-day Yaoshang festival begins in Manipur

  • The Yaoshang festival has begun and will continue for 5 days in Manipur.
  • The festival is celebrated by the Meitei people who are predominantly Hindu.
  • It is celebrated at the same time as Holi and known as ‘Manipur’s version of Holi’.

Key Highlights : 

  • The festival marks the rejuvenation of the spirit of life and commemorates the birthday of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
  • The festival also witnessed a number of cultural and religious activities for 5 days.
  • From some years back, the village level sport competition held by different clubs or organisations during the Yaoshang festival has become a major feature of the celebration.
  • Another feature of this festival is Thabal Chongba (Dancing in the Moonlight), is a traditional dance of the Meitei, where boys and girls gather in an open ground and dance in a circle.

Uttar Pradesh government exempts Electric Vehicles buyers in state from tax, registration fees

  • Uttar Pradesh (UP) Chief Minister (CM) Shri Yogi Adityanath has decided to exempt road tax and registration fees on purchase of Electric Vehicles (EVs) for 3 years from the 14th of October, 2022, to promote electric vehicles.

Key Highlights : 

  • According to the UP Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2022, 100% tax exemption will be given on EVs sold and registered in UP till 13 October 2025.
  • Even if the purchased electric vehicle is made in UP , then also this benefit will be valid for 5 years.
  • On behalf of the government, orders have been issued to all district RTOs to ensure compliance of the instructions with immediate effect.
  • This facility will be available for all 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, and 4-wheelers, Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV)
  • The exemption given by the UP government on electric vehicles is in addition to the subsidy given by the central government.
  • The exemption being given by the Central and State Governments will bring down the cost of two-wheelers by up to Rs 20,000 and that of a car by up to Rs 1 lakh.
  • As per the policy, a subsidy of 15% will also be given on the factory price of electric vehicles purchased in the state.

What are Electric Vehicles?

  • Electric Vehicles are vehicles that are partially or fully powered on electric power.
  • They have low running costs and are also very eco friendly as they use little or no fossil fuels (petrol or diesel).
  • These vehicles can solve the problems of increasing pollution, global warming, depleting natural resources etc.

Mauganj becomes Madhya Pradesh’s 53rd district                          

  • Madhya Pradesh (MP) Chief Minister (CM) Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan declared Tehsil Mauganj of Rewa district as the 53rd district of MP.
  • Reason : To end the discontent against the government regarding the lack of adequate representation for the politically important Vindhya region in the state cabinet.

Key Highlights : 

  • Mauganj district, bordering Uttar Pradesh, will have 4 tehsils – Mauganj, Hanumana, Naigarhi and Devtalab with a population of more than 6 lakhs.
  • Now there will be 8 districts in the Vindhya region of Madhya Pradesh.
  • The residents of Mauganj have been raising the demand for a separate district for a long time since the CM announced in 2013 that Mauganj will be developed as a separate district.
  • On the occasion he transferred an ex-gratia amount of Rs 605 crore to 27,310 labour families of the state with a single click in their accounts under Mukhyamantri Jan-Kalyan (Sambal) Yojana 2.0. 
  • Along with this, he laid the foundation stone of the construction works to be done in the newly formed district and announced Rs 784 crore for the work.

Attukal Pongala, largest festival for women commences in Kerala                                   

  • Attukal Pongala, arguably the largest festival of women in the world, began at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

About ‘Attukal Pongala’ festival : 

  • It is one of the largest gatherings of women in the world, falls on the ninth day of the annual ten-day festival at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple
  • Only women are allowed to participate in it.
  • It is also known as the ‘Women’s Sabarimala’, and making ‘Pongala’ is considered a sacred ritual in the annual festival of this temple.
  • Street-brick stoves are set up at various places in Thiruvananthapuram to cook ‘pongala’ (mixture of grated coconut, rice and jaggery) in earthen or metal pots.
  • The festival made it to the Guinness Book of World Records in 2009 for being the largest religious gathering of women on a single day when around 2.5 million of them participated in its rituals.

  • Sipra Das awarded with Lifetime Achievement award at the 8th National Photography Award ceremony.
  • A total of 13 photographers have received National Photography awards in various categories in New Delhi.
  • Senior photojournalist Shipra Das was honoured with Li fetime Achievement award.
  • The winner of the Lifetime Achievement award was given a cash prize of Rs 3,00,000.
  • The winners of Professional Photographer of the Year and Amateur Photographer of the Year category were given cash prize of Rs.1,00,000 and Rs.75,000 respectively.
  • Special Mention Awardees in both Professional and Amateur categories received a cash prize of Rs.50,000/- and Rs.30,000/- each respectively.
  • The theme of the award competition was- Cultural heritage of India (Professional category) and Life and Water (Amateur category).

Delhi airport one of the best, cleanest in Asia Pacific: ACI

  • As per ACI, Delhi airport is one of the best and cleanest airports in Asia Pacific.
  • Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has won the award for Air Service Quality (ASQ) best airport for 2022 in the category of more than 40 million passengers per annum (MPPA).
  • Tiruchirappalli International Airport in Tamil Nadu has been adjudged as the best airport in Asia Pacific region by ACI in the category of 2 million passengers annually.
  • Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is operated by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) which is a GMR Airports Infrastructure Ltd-consortium.
  • Airports Council International (ACI) has named it as the cleanest airport in the Asia Pacific region.

  • ACI is a not-for-profit organisation of airport operators.
  • It was established in 1991.
  • Its headquarters is in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Group Captain Ms Shaliza Dhami becomes 1st woman officer to command front line IAF combat unit

  • Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain Ms Shalija Dhami has become the first woman officer of the IAF to be given command of a frontline combat unit.
  • Dhami will command the combat unit of the Western Sector.
  • The announcement was made just before International Women’s Day, observed on March 8, 2023.
  • She will be the 1st woman in the 3 forces (army, Navy, Air Force) to command a combat unit.

About Ms Shaliza Dhami : 

  • Shaliza Dhami Born in Ludhiana, Punjab, India.
  • She was commissioned as helicopter pilot in 2003, and has over 2800 hours of flying experience and is commended by Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief on two occasions.
  • She also became the first woman flying instructor of the IAF for Chetak and Cheetah helicopters;
  • On 18 December 2018, Dhami became the 1st woman officer in the IAF to be granted a permanent commission.
  • In 2019, she became the 1st woman officer in the Air Force, who was promoted to the post of flight commander of the flying unit.
  • She is currently posted in the operations branch of a frontline command headquarters.
  • The Indian Army in January,2023 had deployed a woman officer, Captain Shiva Chouhan, on the Siachen glacier for the first time.

Ms Salhoutuonuo Kruse becomes Nagaland’s first woman minister

  • Ms Salhoutuono Kruse, the National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) candidate from Western Angami seat, became the first woman to be sworn in as a minister in Nagaland’s history.
  • She administered the oath of office in the presence of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
  • Ms Kruse defeated Keneizhakho Nakhro, an independent candidate, by only 7 votes.
  • The berth in the Nagaland cabinet led by Neiphiu Rio came 5 days after she and Hekani Jakhalu were elected as the first women Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the State.
  • Both represent the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).
  • Nagaland has had two women MPs – Rano M. Shaiza of the United Democratic Party and S. Phangnon Konyak of the BJP – since it attained Statehood in 1963.

Mr Arun Subramanian becomes 1st Indian-American to be Judge of Manhattan Federal District Court in New York

  • Mr Arun Subramanian became the first Indian American to become the Judge of the Manhattan Federal District Court of New York.
  • With this, Mr Subramanian has become the first South Asian judge to serve on this bench.
  • Senate Majority Leader Senator Chuck Schumer confirmed the nomination of Mr. Subramanian by a vote of 58-37.
  • In September 2022, US President Mr Joe Biden announced the nomination of Mr Subramanian for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

About Mr Arun Subramanian : 

  • He served as a law clerk for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court of the United States from 2006 to 2007.
  • Currently he serves as Chairperson of Susman Godfrey’s 2022 Pro Bono Committee.
  • He is also a longtime Director of the Columbia Law Review, one of the Nation’s preeminent legal journals.
  • South District New York notably has one of the largest South Asian-American populations in the country.

Reliance Industries to appoint Mr Hitesh Sethia as Jio Financial CEO  

  • Reliance Industries has appointed Mr Hitesh Sethia, as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) of its newly created financial services unit, Jio Financial Services (JFS).
  • The company is preparing for a listing in India after spinning off from Reliance Industries.
  • Mr KV Kamath was appointed as the non-executive chairman of Jio Financial Services in November, 2022.

  • Mr Sethia, who has an experience of over 20 years in the field of financial services.
  • He previously served as the top executive from McLaren Strategic Ventures.

About JFS : 

  • JFS will acquire liquid assets to provide adequate regulatory capital for lending.
  • It will incubate financial services verticals such as insurance, payments, digital broking, and asset management for at least the next 3 years.
  • In a report published in the year of 2022Macquarie Research announced that JFS could become India’s 5th-largest financial services firm.
  • HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank are the 4 top companies in the business.

Fintech unicorn Slice picks up 5% stake in North East Small Finance Bank                                  

  • Payment app Slice has invested $3.42 million to acquire a 5% equity stake in Guwahati-based North East Small Finance Bank.
  • An investment of up to 5% in a bank does not require approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). 
  • Additional stake purchases will need the banking regulator’s clearance.
  • Slice had received an in-principle approval for a prepaid payment instrument (PPI) licence from the RBI.

  • North East Small Finance Bank is majority owned by RGVN (North East) Microfinance Ltd which had about 84% stake as of September 2022.
  • RGVN Microfinance has been operating its microfinance business and the small finance bank is a wholly owned subsidiary.
  • It was granted an in-principle banking licence in September 2015 after which it started operations in October 2017.

Indian Navy Successfully Test-Fires Indigenous Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile from INS Visakhapatnam 

  • The Indian Navy carried out a successful test-firing of a Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) from frontline warship Indian Naval Ship (INS) Visakhapatnam,Andhra Pradesh(AP).
  • The test validates the capability to engage the weapon as an anti-ship missile.

About MRSAM : 

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI) have jointly developed MRSAM.
  • It has been produced at Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
  • The development of MRSAM reflects the Indian Navy’s commitment to Atma Nirbhar bharat.

About INS Visakhapatnam :          

  • INS Visakhapatnam was commissioned on 21 November 2021. 
  • It is one of the largest stealth guided-missile destroyers in service with the Indian Navy.
  • INS Visakhapatnam is indigenously designed by Directorate of Naval design and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • Under P-15B, Visakhapatnam class stealth destroyer, 4 warships were to be inducted & these were Visakhapatnam, Mormugao, Imphal and Surat.
  • INS Mormugao was commissioned in Mumbai on 18 December 2022.

China Launches Communications Satellite Zhongxing-26 Into Orbit                                  

  • China Launched Zhongxing-26 (ChinaSat-26), a communications satellite into geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) by a Long March 3B rocket lifted off from Xichang Space Centre (XLSC), southwest China.

Objective : 

  • To provide broadband connectivity for aviation and ship-related operations.
  • The satellite was launched by the China Academy of Space Technology.

About Zhongxing-26 : 

  • Zhongxing-26 is based on the DFH-4E satellite bus and uses chemical and electric propulsion.
  • It is China’s first satellite providing more than 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) and was developed by China Aerospace Science & Technology Corporation’s (CASC) China Academy of Space Technology (CAST).
  • It is the 5th Long March launch this calendar year, with CASC planning more than 60 launches in 2023.
  • The satellite is equipped with 94 Ka-band user beams.
  • This is 3.5 times more than the 26-beam, 20 Gbps, Dongfanghong-3B-based Zhongxing-16 launched in 2017.

Mirabai Chanu wins BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year for a second time

  • Mirabai Chanu has won the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year (ISWOTY) award for the second consecutive time.
  • She is the first person to win this award twice.
  • For this year’s award, PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Nikhat Zareen were the other shortlisted contenders.
  • Table tennis player Bhavina Patel received the BBC Para Sportswoman of the Year award.
  • This category of the award has been introduced first time.
  • Boxer Nitu Ghanghas has been selected as the ‘BBC Emerging Player of the Year’.
  • ‘BBC Lifetime Achievement Award’ was conferred to Pritam Siwach, former Indian women’s hockey team captain.

Irani Cup: Rest of India beat Madhya Pradesh to win title

  • The ‘Rest of India’ team defeats Madhya Pradesh to lift the prestigious Irani Cup title.
  • In the final match, the Rest of India defeated Madhya Pradesh by 238 runs.
  • Chasing the target of 437 runs for victory, the entire Madhya Pradesh team was reduced to 198 runs in 58.4 overs.
  • Irani Cup is a major domestic-level cricket competition in India.
  • This final match was played at Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior.
  • The 2022–23 edition was the 59th edition of the Irani Cup.
  • It is the first-class cricket competition in India.

Youth Affairs, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur launches Yuva Utsava – India@2047 from Ropar in Punjab

  • Sports Minister Anurag Thakur launched Yuva Utsava – India@2047 from Ropar in Punjab.
  • In the first phase, Yuva Utsava is being held in 150 districts across India to promote youth power till 31st March 2023.
  • Schools and colleges of the districts are conducting programmes in the first phase.
  • Yuva Utsava – India@2047 is being conducted by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports through Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan in all districts across India.
  • It will be held on three levels.
  • It will begin with a one-day district-level programme.
  • The winners of the District Level will take part at the State level Yuva Utsav.
  • State level Yuva Utsav is a 2-day program scheduled to be held during August to September 2023 at State Capitals.
  • The winners of all the State level programs shall take part at the National Level Yuva Utsav.
  • National Level Yuva Utsav is scheduled to be held in 3rd/4th week of October, 2023 at Delhi.
  • Youth of 15 to 29 years are eligible to take part in the programs at District, State and National Levels.
  • Across the three levels, many participants will compete and traditional artists will showcase the rich cultural heritage of the India.
  • The theme for the Yuva Utsav will be Panch Pran.

  • India celebrates the 54th anniversary of CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) Raising Day on March 10, 2023.
  • Observing CISF Raising Day 2023 is important as it brings better protection and security to industrial undertakings in the country
  • CISF was formed on March 10, 1969, under the CISF Act of the Parliament of India.
  • It started with as many as 2,800 personnel for the better protection and security of industrial undertakings in the country.
  • Three battalions were formed to provide integrated security cover to the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) which, in those years, occupied the commanding heights of the economy.
