World Red Cross Day- 8th May:
- World Red Cross Red Crescent Day is celebrated on 8 May each year.
- This date is the anniversary of the birth of Jean-Henry Dunant, who was born on 8 May
- He was the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.
- The theme of World Red Cross Day 2022 is #BeHUMANKIND (Believe in the power of Kindness).
- The theme of World Red Cross Day 2022 focuses on the power of kindness and how it can impact the whole world
- The first Red Cross Day was celebrated on May 8, 1948.
- In 1946 during World War II, the Tokyo proposal was put into effect.
- The possibility of an annual celebration was asked by the Board of Governors of the ‘League of the Red Cross Societies (LORCS)’, later called the General Assembly of the International Federation of Red Cross Societies.
- Two years later the proposal of celebrating annually World Red Cross Day was adopted on 8 May 1948, the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross.
- In 1984 officially it was named World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
BRO celebrates its 62nd raising day- on 7th May
- Border Roads Organisation or BRO is celebrating its 62nd Raising Day on 7th
- BRO, a leader in the arena of infrastructural development in the border areas of the country is celebrating its 63 years of glorious service to the nation.
- Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was formed on May 7, 1960, with the primary role to provide road connectivity in India’s border areas.
- It also creates, upgrades and maintains infrastructure along borders to meet India’s overall tactical and strategic goals.
World Athletics Day: May 7th
- In a bid to encourage sports activities throughout the world, May 7 is celebrated annually as World Athletics Day.
- The special day is observed across the globe to promote the importance of fitness and health.
- Introduced in 1996, the day aims to spread awareness among the youth about athletics.
- It was also introduced as a social responsibility project titled Athletic for a better world by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
- The day was founded by IAAF president Primo Nebiolo in 1996.
- IAAF was founded on July 17, 1912, in Sweden’s Stockholm; its name was later changed to International Association of Athletics Federation.
Objectives:
- Popularising sports among youth.
- Boosting athletics to such an extent that it becomes the primary sport in every school and institution.
- Imparting public awareness about athletics and also spreading the importance of sporting activity among youngsters.
- Establish a crucial connection between the youth, sport, and environmental conservation.

“Enterprise India National Coir Conclave 2022” inaugurated by MSME Minister Narayan Rane:
- Union Minister for MSME Shri Narayan Rane and Minister of State for MSME Shri Bhanu Pratap Singh Verma along with other State Ministers and senior officials inaugurated the Enterprise India National Coir Conclave 2022 being organised under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
- Shri Rane emphasized the development of new products and new applications of coir through product development, product diversification& adoption of new technologies.
- This event is being organized with an idea to bring about a coordinated effort between the State and Central Governments to promote the production of coir and coir products and to identify new areas of application of coir.
PM Modi to address the inaugural session of “JITO Connect 2022”:
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the inaugural session of Jain International Trade Organisation’s JITO Connect 2022 on 6th May 2022 through video conferencing.
- Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO) is a global organisation connecting Jains worldwide.
- JITO Connect is an endeavour to help business and industry by providing an avenue for mutual networking and personal interactions.
- JITO Connect 2022 is a three-day event being organized at Gangadham Annex, Pune from May 6 to 8 and will encompass multiple sessions on diverse issues relating to business and the economy.
- PM Modi’s tour to Europe comes at a time when the region is facing numerous trade, finance, and geopolitical challenges due to the Russia-Ukraine war.
India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System train set to be handed over to NCRTC at Savli in Gujarat:
- The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) will be receiving India’s first semi-high speed train set for Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) at Alstom’s Savli in Gujarat.
- The event will be held in presence of the Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Manoj Joshi.
- The RRTS train sets are being manufactured under Make in India initiative and are capable of running at a top speed of 180 kilometres per hour.
- NCRTC is the implementing agency of India’s first RRTS corridor between Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut.
- The construction work on the 82-kilometre-long corridor is in full swing.
- The 17 km long priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai is targeted to be commissioned by 2023 and the full corridor will be fully operational by 2025.
India embarks on the World’s Largest Film Restoration Project:
- Minister of Information & Broadcasting Anurag Thakur has announced that the World’s largest film restoration project under National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM) will begin with a budget of INR 363 crores, which is awarded by the Ministry.
- National Film Heritage Mission in addition to restoration also involves the ongoing preservation processes of film condition assessment, preventive conservation and digitization, with a total allocated budget of INR 597 crores, which is one of the world’s largest film preservation missions.
- The restoration project now awarded is set to commence in full swing at NFAI.
- The process involves frame-to-frame digital and semi-automated manual picture and sound restoration from the best surviving source material.
- Under NFHM, approximately 2,200 films will undergo restoration.

Manipur CM Biren Singh launches Direct Benefit Transfer for organic farmers
- Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh launched the Direct Benefit Transfer for 18,000 registered farmers under Horticulture Department for Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER), Phase- III (2020-23).
- Direct Benefit Transfer of 11,250 rupees per farmer for the components of assistance for on-farm input for both first year and second year and for off-farm inputs production for first year was transferred to the individual registered farmer’s account.
- Also An amount of 3,750 rupees will be transferred to the farmers in the next installment.
- 25,000 farmers under this phase including 7,000 farmers registered under Agriculture Department and 18,000 farmers under Horticulture Department.
- Horticulture and Soil Conservation Minister Letpao Haokip, Additional Chief Secretary P. Vaiphei also attended the programme.

Kerala Govt To Launch App For Diagnosing, Controlling Lifestyle Diseases – Shaili App
- The Kerala government is set to launch an Android app named Shaili App.
Aim :
- To diagnose and control lifestyle diseases among people in the southern State.
- The app has been set up as part of the population-based screening project launched by the Health Department under the Nava Kerala Karma plan.
- As part of the health-screening project, ASHA workers have been tasked with collecting information from persons over the age of 30 in their respective areas about any lifestyle diseases or risk factors they may have.
About the Shaili App :
- Shaili App, set up under the e-Health initiative, would help to collect and codify the information quickly.
- The app would primarily collect information about diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, lung diseases as well as other lifestyle-related ailments and cancers.
- It would collect information about the lifestyles of an individual that lead to these diseases.
- Based on the information collected, the health status of the individuals would be scored and those with a score of above four would be asked to visit the nearest health centre for a check-up for lifestyle diseases.
- The ASHA workers would be incentivised to visit the households in their respective areas and information collected by them would be immediately made available to health workers.

Haryana Govt Launches ‘e-Adhigam’ Scheme
- The Haryana government has launched the e-Adhigam scheme under which nearly three lakh tablets were distributed to government school students of grade 10 and 12.
- These devices come with pre-loaded content along with personalised and adaptive learning software, and 2GB free data.
- Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar stated this after launching the Advance Digital Haryana Initiative of Government with Adaptive Modules (Adigham) scheme at Maharishi Dayanand University in Rohtak,Haryana.
About e-Adhigam scheme :
- These devices come with pre-loaded content along with personalised and adaptive learning software, and 2GB free data.
- The state government plans to distribute tablets among 5 lakh students who are in Class 10, 11 and 12.
- Under the e-Adhigam scheme, devices were distributed among students in 119 blocks across the state simultaneously.
- India has set a target to implement this policy by 2030, but our target is 2025.

Maharashtra Govt launches Jivhala Scheme for Prisoners
- The Maharashtra Department of Prisons has launched a loan scheme called Jivhala for inmates serving sentences in jails across Maharashtra, being offered by the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank.
- The pilot was introduced for prisoners at Yerawada Central Jail in Pune, and will gradually be extended to nearly 60 prisons across Maharashtra.
- Existing loans initiatives for inmates are for rehabilitation after completion of their prison terms.
- The credit scheme, called Jivhala meaning affection in Marathi,
- It has been launched primarily for convicted inmates who are undergoing a prison sentence of more than 3 years.
- In the initial phase, a loan of Rs 50,000 will be given at a 7 percent interest rate.
- Of the interest the bank earns, one percent will be given back to the system as a contribution to the Prisoners Welfare Fund.
- The loan will be provided without any requirement of mortgage or guarantor.
How will the inmates repay the loans?
- On entering the prison system, an inmate is categorised as skilled, semi-skilled or un-skilled and assigned work in various industrial and manufacturing units inside the prison.
- For this work, they are paid anywhere between Rs 50 to 70 as daily wages.
Note :
- The credit scheme Jivhala is the first kind of credit scheme that has been launched for prisoners in India.

NASA climate research scientist Cynthia Rosenzweig Receives 2022 World Food Prize
- Cynthia Rosenzweig, a senior research scientist and head of the Climate Impacts Group at NASAs Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, received the 2022 World Food Prize from the World Food Prize Foundation.
- On 5 May, 2022 President of the World Food Prize Foundation, Barbara Stinson announced the 2022 Laureate during a ceremony hosted by the S. Department of State.
- Rosenzweig was selected for the $250,000 prize in recognition of her innovative modeling of the impact of climate change on food production.
- She will officially receive the World Food Prize at a ceremony in October 2022.
About Cynthia Rosenzweig :
- Rosenzweig is currently a Senior Research Scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS ) and Adjunct Senior Research Scientist at the Columbia Climate School.
- Her research focuses on improving models and assessments of how climate change will affect agriculture and the food supply in the future.
- Also, she uses data from NASA satellites and models to study agricultural regions around the world and how they are changing.
- She was one of the Coordinating Lead Authors of the food chapter on IPCCs Special Report on Climate Change and Land.
- Previously she has served as coordinating lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II Fourth Assessment Report in 2007 and the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land in 2019.
- She is also a co-founder of the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP), an international project using climate science, crop modeling and economic modeling to understand crop yield and food security in a changing climate.

DFPD gets Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration, 2020 for the One Nation One Ration Card scheme
- The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) received the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration, 2020 for its scheme One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC).
- Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi conferred the Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Administration on the occasion of 15th Civil Services Day in New Delhi.
- The award was presented under the category Innovation (General)-Central.
- Presently, ONROC plan is enabled in 35 States/UTs up to Feb 2022 seamlessly covering nearly 77 Crore beneficiaries (almost 96.8% of NFSA population) in the country.
- A specially customized Android Mobile App on ONORC is also available in 13 languages and has been downloaded nearly 20 lakh times.
- A 5-digit 14445 toll-free number for migrant NFSA beneficiaries is also available in most States/UTs under ONORC.

Russia launches Secret Military Spacecraft into orbit
- The Russian space agency conducted a satellite launch using the brand new Angara-1.2 light launch vehicle.
- The launch took place at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the town of Mirny in the north-western Russian region of Arkhangelsk Oblast.
- The mission was a test flight for the new Angara-1.2 light rocket and it lifted off with a satellite for the first time.
- Angara rocket has passed the trial, it would be used to launch payloads up to 3,800 kilograms.

- The Plesetsk cosmodrome, which was founded in 1957, has been used to launch a variety of rockets such as the R-7 derived Soyuz, the Cosmos-3M, Rokot, Tsyklon and the Angara.

2020 Civil Registration System report – Ladakh recorded highest sex ratio in the country & Manipur lowest
- According to the annual report on Vital Statistics based on 2020 Civil Registration System report, The Union Territory of Ladakh recorded the highest sex ratio (1104) at birth in the country in 2020, followed by Arunachal Pradesh (1011), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (984), Tripura (974) and Kerala (969).
- Lowest intercourse ratio at start was reported by Manipur (880), adopted by Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (898), Gujarat (909), Haryana (916) and Madhya Pradesh (921).
- The report was published by the Registrar General of India.
- Meanwhile in 2019, the highest sex ratio at birth was reported by Arunachal Pradesh (1,024), followed by Nagaland (1,001), Mizoram (975) and A&N Islands (965), and the lowest sex ratio was reported by Gujarat (901), Assam (903), Madhya Pradesh (905) and Jammu & Kashmir (909).
- The Intercourse Ratio (Variety of females per thousand males) at the start of registered occasions is a vital indicator to map the intercourse differential of the inhabitants at first of their life.

Asian Games 2022 in China postponed to 2023:
- The Asian Games 2022, due to be held in Hangzhou, China in September, have been postponed to 2023 due to rising COVID-19 cases in the country, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) was announced.
- The Olympic Council of Asia, the governing body for the Asian Games, will later announce the new dates for the 19th edition of the Games.
- The Asian Games 2022 were originally scheduled from September 10 to 25
- The host city of Hangzhou is less than 200km away from Shanghai, which is currently fighting another major COVID-19 outbreak and has strict restrictions in place, including a weeks-long lockdown.
- The OCA also announced that the third edition of the Asian Youth Games, scheduled to be held in Shantou in December, has been cancelled.
- The World University Games 2021, to be held from June 26 to July 27 in Chengdu this year, have also been pushed to 2023.
