World Day of War Orphans: January 6

  • Every year on January 6, the World Day of War Orphans is recognized.
  • The World Day of War Orphans 2022 reminds the world that caring for children in awful conditions is a duty, particularly in the face of a pandemic.
  • Children who have been injured in a gunfight or separated from their families require particular care in order to heal the mental wounds of war, begin school, and restart normal life.
  • World Day of War Orphans was started by the French organisation SOS Enfants en Detresses, which aimed to help children affected by conflict.
  • According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), an orphan is defined as a “child under 18 years of age who has lost one or both parents to any cause of death”.

PM to inaugurate second campus of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute in Kolkata:

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the second campus of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) in Kolkata via video conferencing.
  • The second campus of CNCI has been built in line with the Prime Minister’s vision to expand and upgrade the health facilities in all parts of the country.
  • The second campus of CNCI has been built at a cost of over Rs 530 crore, out of which around Rs 400 crores have been provided by the Union government and rest by the West Bengal government, in the ratio of 75:25.
  • The campus is a 460 bedded comprehensive cancer centre unit with cutting edge infrastructure for cancer diagnosis, staging, treatment and care.
  • The campus is equipped with modern facilities like Nuclear Medicine (PET), 3.0 Tesla MRI, 128 slice CT scanner, Radionuclide therapy unit, endoscopy suite, modern brachytherapy units etc.

19th Meeting of National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) held:

  • The 19th Meeting of National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) was held here under the chairmanship of Union Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change Shri Bhupender Yadav.
  • Hon’ble Members of Parliaments Smt. Diya Kumari, Shri Rajeev Pratap Ruddy, & Shri Harshvardhan Singh Dungarpur, Secretary Smt. Leena Nadan & DGF Shri Chandra Prakash Goyal were present among others.
  • Tiger Conservation efforts in the Indian context have the community at its centre, hence continuous efforts are being made for involvement of local communities in protection and Eco-tourism activities.
  • During the course of the meeting Shri Yadav also informed that ‘India for Tigers: A Rally on Wheels’, organized under the aegis of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change was a mega success.
  • The rally saw an active involvement of diverse range of stakeholders – forest officials, school and college students, media persons, local communities, and representatives from NGOs etc.

Six One District One Product” brands launched under the PMFME scheme:

  • Union Minister for Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Shri Pashupati Kumar Paras and Minister of State, Shri Prahlad Singh Patel and senior officials of NAFED has launched six, One District One Product (ODOP).
  • One District One Product (ODOP) brands under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro food processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme at Panchsheel Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • The Ministry of Food Processing Industries has signed an agreement with NAFED for developing 10 brands of selected ODOPs under the branding and marketing component of the PMFME scheme.
  • Out of these, six brands namely Amrit Phal, Cori Gold, Kashmiri Mantra, Madhu Mantra, Somdana, and Whole Wheat Cookies of Dilli Bakes were launched.

PM and new German Chancellor express hope of cooperation initiatives in areas of Climate Action and Green Energy:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz have agreed on further diversifying cooperation and exchanges in new areas including Climate Action and Green Energy.
  • Prime Minister Modi held a telephonic conversation with Mr Scholz and congratulated him on his appointment as the German Chancellor.
  • Modi expressed his appreciation for the immense contribution of former Chancellor Angela Merkel in strengthening the India-Germany Strategic Partnership and looked forward to continuing this positive momentum under the leadership of Mr Scholz.

Gujarat CM launches Student Start-ups and Innovation Policy 2.0:

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has launched Student Start-ups and Innovation Policy (SSIP) 2.0 which is aimed at financially supporting school students in innovation.
  • He announced the policy, while inaugurating the two-day International Conference on Academic Institutions at Gujarat Science City in Ahmedabad.
  • This policy has a provision of setting up active innovation and incubation centres across all universities in the state.
  • It intends to cover 50 lakh students across One thousand higher education institutes and 10 thousand schools of innovation and entrepreneurship.

RBI appoints Ajay Kumar Choudhary and Deepak Kumar as new Executive Directors

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Deepak Kumar and Ajay Kumar Choudhary as new executive directors (ED) with effect from 03 January 2022.

About Deepak Kumar :

  • Deepak Kumar was heading the department of information technology of RBI.
  • Kumar has over a span of three decades working in RBI’s central office departments covering policy making and project management functions in the areas of information technology, cyber security, payment systems, currency management, human resource management, banking supervision, foreign exchange management.
  • He will look after Foreign Exchange Department, Department of Communication and Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the RBI.

About Ajay Kumar Choudhary :

  • Ajay Choudhary was Chief General Manager-in-Charge, Department of Supervision.
  • He has, over a span of three decades, served in supervision, regulation, currency management, payments and settlements, and other areas in the Reserve Bank, in its Central Office as well as Regional Offices.
  • He will look after the fintech department, risk monitoring department and inspection department.

  • On 5 January, 2022, Former US envoy to India, Atul Keshap was appointed as President of the S.-India Business Council (USIBC), announced the US Chamber of Commerce.
  • Atul Keshap replaces Nisha Desai Biswal.
  • Prior to this, Keshap served in Delhi as United States ChargĂ© d’Affaires to India, leading the US Embassy team.

  • Keshap was born in June 1971 in Nigeria.
  • He formerly served asS. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State of the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the United States Department of State.
  • From 2010 to 2012, Keshap worked with Assistant Secretary of State Robert O. Blake was Director of the Office of India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, and Bhutan Affairs.

  • Google has acquired an Israel-based cybersecurity startup ‘Siemplify’ reportedly for $500 million.
  • The startup will be integrated into Google Cloud Platform, especially its Chronicle operation.
  • The acquisition will expand the U.S. tech giant’s security offerings in the country amid rising cyber-attacks.
  • Google has pledged to invest $10 billion in cybersecurity over the next five years.

  • On Jan 04, 2021, The renowned social worker and recipient of the Padma Shri Award, Sindhutai Sapkal passed away at the age of 74.

About Sindhutai Sapkal :

  • Sindhutai Sapkal was born on 14 November 1948 in Wardha district, Maharashtra.
  • She is fondly known as the mother of orphan children.
  • Sapkal, popularly referred to as “Mai“, Sapkal ran an orphanage in Pune where she adopted over 1,000 orphan kids.
  • Mee Sindhutai Sapkal’, a Marathi movie based on her life was also released in 2010.

Kenyan Fossil Hunter and Conservationist Richard Leakey Passes away

  • Richard Leakey, the world-renowned paleoanthropologist-turned-conservationist, Passes away at the age of 77.

About Richard Leakey :

  • Richard Leakey was born on 19 December 1944 in Nairobi, British Kenya.
  • He was Director of the National Museum of Kenya, founded the NGO WildlifeDirect and was the chairman of the Kenya Wildlife Service.
  • The legendary paleoanthropologist is credited for the discovery of ‘Turkana Boy’ in 1984 which led to groundbreaking discoveries proving that humankind evolved in Africa.
  • Leakey was serving as chairman of the Turkana Basin Institute at Stony Brook University in New York.
  • He is also known for spearheading anti-ivory campaigns in order to save the African elephant population.

Note :

  • The Turkana boy is the most complete fossil Skeleton of a human ancestor ever found.
  • Paleoanthropology is the study of human evolution through fossil and archeological records.
