1. PM Narendra Modi arrives in France for G-7 summit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Biarritz, France to participate in the G7 summit (24–26th August 2019).
  • The countries which are part of the G7 include the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US as well as the European Union (EU).
  • The theme of this year summit is ‘Fighting Inequality’.
  • Top leaders of the world have gathered to discuss various issues including global warming, climate change, biodiversity, Taxation and digital transformation.
  • Although India is not a member of the G7 group, Mr Narendra Modi will attend the G7 Summit as a special guest as he has been personally invited by French President Emmanuel Macron.
  • Mr Modi will address sessions on the environment, climateoceans and digital transformation at the G7 Summit in Biarritz, France.

2. Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa embarks on 3-day visit to Thailand

  • Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa embarked on a three-day visit to Thailand.
  • During his visit, he will attend the Indo Pacific Chiefs of Defence Conference in Bangkok.
  • The theme for the conference is "Collaboration in a free and Open Indo - Pacific”.
  • The conference will provide perspectives on common challenges faced by attending nations and elicit open discussions on the same.
  •  The Chiefs of Defence of over 33 countries are scheduled to attend the Conference.

3. Harsh Vardhan inaugurates FSSAI’s National Food Laboratory

  • Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has inaugurated FSSAI’s National Food Laboratory (NFL) in Ghaziabad on 13th anniversary of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
  • This national lab is a result of a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP), the first-of-its-kind in the food laboratory sector.
  • The lab is equipped with the latest technologies and facilities to conduct analysis as per global accreditation standards for testing and calibration.
  • NFL is one of the two premier referral laboratories under the direct administrative control of the apex food regulator named, Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI).

4. President inaugurates the First World Youth Conference on Kindness

  • The President Shri Ram Nath Kovind has inaugurated the first World Youth Conference on Kindness in New Delhi.
  • The World Youth Conference on Kindness is being organised by the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development, Ministry of Human Resource Development.
  • The objective of the conference to impart critical competencies (i.e. empathy, compassion, mindfulness and critical inquiry) in global youth to inspire, empower and enable them to transform themselves and build long-lasting peace in their communities.
  • Youth leaders, representing over 27 countries, are participating in this Conference.

5. Bandhan Bank launches a co-branded credit card with Standard Chartered

  • Bandhan Bank has launched a co-branded credit card in association with Standard Chartered bank to offer a complete suite of services to its existing customers.
  • The credit card would be offered to 40 lakh savings bank account holders across the 1,000 branches of Bandhan Bank.
  • As part of the tie-up, Bandhan Bank will be responsible for identifying and issuing cards to its customers.
  • While Standard Chartered bank will take the credit risk.

6. BookMyForex, YES Bank tie-up for a foreign exchange travel card

  • A marketplace for foreign exchange and remittances ‘BookMyForex.com’ has partnered with YES Bank to launch a co-branded multi-currency forex travel card for Indian overseas travellers.
  • Now, Customers will be able to buy forex travel cards at the click of a button on the BookMyForex platform and get free doorstep delivery across major cities in India.
  • BookMyForex will offer zero margin or exact inter-bank rates 24x7 on forex card sales.

7. CVC constitutes a panel to examine bank fraud

  • The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has constituted Advisory Board for Banking Frauds (ABBF) headed by former Vigilance Commissioner T M Bhasin to examine bank fraud of over 50 crore rupees and recommend action.
  • The panel in its previous avatar called the Advisory Board on Bank, Commercial and Financial Frauds.
  • It will function as the first level of examination of all large fraud cases before recommendations or references are made to the investigative agencies by the respective Public Sector Banks.
  • According to CVC, The four-member board's jurisdiction will be confined to those cases involving officers of General Manager level and above in the PSBs in respect of an allegation of fraud in a borrowal account.
  •  The banks will refer all large fraud cases above 50 crore rupees to ABBF and on receipt of its recommendation, they concerned will take further action in such matter.

8. Former finance minister Arun Jaitley passes away

  • Veteran BJP leader and former Union Minister Arun Jaitley (66-years) passed away at AIIMS hospital in New Delhi.
  • Arun Jaitley held the cabinet portfolios of Finance, Defence, Corporate Affairs, Commerce and Industry and Law & Justice in the Vajpayee government and Narendra Modi government.
  • Mr Jaitley was the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of the Government of India from 2014 to 2019.

  • American business magazine, 'Forbes' has released the list of the world’s 10 highest-paid actresses in 2019.
  • For the second consecutive year, Hollywood Actress Scarlett Johansson (34-year) has topped the Forbes’ list of highest-paid female actors in the world.
  • Spurred by the success of her Marvel film Avengers: Endgame, her earning reached USD 56 million.
  • At number two is Modern Family star Sofia Vergara with USD 44.1 million earnings.

10. Bahrain conferred PM Modi with "The King Hamad Order of the Renaissance award"

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with King of Bahrain Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa in Manama on various bilateral and regional issues.
  • The two countries signed four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in the field of culture, space, solar energy, and on the roll-out of the 'RuPay card'.
  • PM Modi is the first-ever Indian Prime Minister to visit Bahrain.
  • Prime Minister Modi was also honoured with ‘The King Hamad Order of the Renaissance’ by Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa (King of Bahrain) for his effort to strengthen the bilateral ties with the Gulf nation.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the USD 4.2 million redevelopment project of the 200-year-old Lord Sri Krishna temple in Bahrain's Manama.

11. PM holds receives UAE's Highest Civilian Honour

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the full spectrum of the strong India-UAE partnership with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
  • Mr. Modi was also conferred with the highest civilian award of the United Arab Emirates, the "Order of Zayed".
  • Prime Minister Modi launched Rupay Card in the UAE to promote cashless transactions abroad.
  • With this, UAE has become the first country in the Middle East to have this facility.
  • To mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a commemorative stamp was jointly released by Mr Modi and the Crown Prince at the Presidential Palace in Abu Dhabi.

  • The Order of Zayed is the United Arab Emirates' highest civil decoration named after Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE.

12. Gokulam Kerala FC wins Durand Cup 2019

  • In football, Gokulam Kerala FC won the Durand Cup 2019 defeating heavyweights Mohun Bagan 2-1 at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata.
  • With this win, Gokulam Kerala became the first club from the state in 22 years to clinch the tournament.
  • Gokulam Kerala Football Club is an Indian professional football club based in Kozhikode, Kerala.
  • A total of 16 teams (Indian Super League-5, I-League- 6, 2nd division club - 1 and armed forces teams- 4) participated in this year's competition.

Note:

  • The 2019 Durand Cup (129th edition) of the Durand Cup, oldest football tournament in Asia, since the tournament's founding in 1888.
  • The matches were played across three locations in West Bengal (Kolkata, Howrah and Kalyani) from 2nd to 24th August 2019.

13. Komalika Bari becomes recurve cadet world champion

  • India's Komalika Bari (17-years) has become recurve cadet world champion at the World Archery Youth Championships in Madrid, Spain.
  • She defeated higher-ranked Sonoda Waka of Japan 7-3 in the final and earn India's second gold on the final day of the Championships.
  • Now Komalika is India's second recurve cadet world champion (under-18) after Deepika Kumari who won the title in 2009.
  • India also won a gold in the compound junior mixed pair event and a bronze in the compound junior men's team event.
  • India concluded their campaign with two gold and one bronze medal in their last event.

14. India win the first Test against West Indies by a margin of 318 runs

  • India beat West Indies by a massive 318-run margin in the first cricket Test at North Sound in Antigua.
  • With this win, India has taken a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series.
  • Chasing a stiff target of 419 runs, West Indies were all out for just 100 (in 26.5 overs) in their second innings on the fourth day.
  • Earlier, India declared their second innings at 343 for seven, setting the West Indies a 419-run target to win the Test.

15. PV Sindhu becomes the first Indian to win BWF World Championships Gold

  • Badminton star PV Sindhu (24-years) defeated Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 21-7, 21-7 in the women's singles final to become the first Indian to win Gold at the BWF World Championships.
  • With the win, Sindhu has a full set of medals at World Championships - two bronze medals, two silver medals and a gold medal.

16. Sai Praneeth won the bronze medal at BWF World Championships 2019

  • B. Sai Praneeth (27-years) has become the second Indian male shuttler (first Prakash Padukone- 1983) to win a bronze medal in the BWF World Championships in 2019.
  • Sai Praneeth was outclassed by defending champion Kento Momota (World No. 1) by 13–21, 8–21.
  • Japanese Kento Momota has won the Gold medal of 2019 Badminton World Championship.
  • Danish badminton player Anders Antonsen has won the Silver medal at 2019 Badminton World Championship.

  • The men's singles tournament of the 2019 BWF World Championships held at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland (19 to 25 August).
