Volume Formulas

A table of volume formulas and surface area formulas used to calculate the volume and surface area of three-dimensional geometrical shapes: cube, cuboid, prism, solid cylinder, hollow cylinder, cone, pyramid, sphere and hemisphere.

Shape
Volume Formula
Surface Area Formula
Cube
s3
where s = length of the side
6s2
where s = length of the side
Cuboid
lwh
where l = length, w = width,
h = height
2(lw + lh + wh)
 where l = length, w = width, h = height
Prism
area of base × height
2 × area of base + perimeter of base × height
Cylinder
πr2h
where r = radius, h = height
2πr (r + h)
where r = radius, h = height
Hollow Cylinder
πh(R2 − r2)
where R = radius of the outer surface,
r = radius of the inner surface
2πrh + 2πRh + 2(πR2 − πr2)
where R = radius of the outer surface,
r = radius of the inner surface
Cone
1/3 πr2h
 where r = radius, h = height
πr (r + s) where r = radius, s = slant height
Pyramid
1/3 × area of base ×  height
Any pyramid = area of base + area of each of the lateral faces
Regular pyramid = area of base + ½  ps where p = perimeter of the base,
s = slant height
Square pyramid = b2 + 2bs where b = length of the base, s = slant height
Sphere
 4/3 πr3
where r = radius
4πr2
where r = radius
Hemisphere
2/3 πr3
where r = radius
3πr3
where r = radius
