1. Udaipur to host India’s Largest Education Brainstorm

The 3rd edition of India’s largest education brainstorming event, the ScooNews Global Educators Fest (SGEF) will be held in the city of lakes, Udaipur, Rajasthan (9 & 10th August 2019).

The theme for this year's fest is 'Education for Sustainability: Moving on from conformity to creativity'.

It will bring together over 500 educators to discuss the way towards establishing India as the next global education powerhouse.

1. Govt. revokes Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir

The Union government has moved to scrap provisions under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which grants special status to the state of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) in the Union of India.

It has decided that Jammu and Kashmir would be turned into a Union Territory with a legislature, and the Ladakh division would be made a separate Union Territory (without legislature).

Home Minister Amit Shah has announced in the Rajya Sabha that provisions of Article 370 were being scrapped.

1. Journalist Ravish Kumar among 2019 Ramon Magsaysay award winners

India's TV journalists Ravish Kumar (44-years) has won the ‘Magsaysay award 2019’ for his news show ‘Prime Time’ which "deals with real-life, under-reported problems of ordinary people".

Ravish Kumar (NDTV India's senior executive editor) is among the five recipients of the 2019 Magsaysay award, which recognises the "greatness of spirit and transformative leadership in Asia".

The four other winners of the 2019 Ramon Magsaysay Award are Ko Swe Win (Myanmar), Angkhana Neelapaijit (Thailand), Raymundo Pujante Cayabyab (Philippines)and Kim Jong-Ki (South Korea).

1. R N Ravi sworn in as Nagaland Governor

Former Intelligence Bureau officer R N Ravi (67-years) was sworn in as the Governor of Nagaland at a function in Raj Bhawan, Kohima.

Acting Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Arup Kumar Goswamiadministered him the oath of office.

Mr. Ravi succeeded P B Acharyawhose tenure ended on 19^th July this year.

He was appointed as the new governor on 20^th July by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Earlier, R.N Ravi served as a former Intelligence Bureau officer and an interlocutor for the Naga peace talks.

1. Kapil Dev honoured with Bharat Gaurav Award

India's first World Cup-winningcricket captain Kapil Dev (60 years) has been conferred with the East Bengal's highest honour, ‘Bharat Gaurav’.

Kapil had signed for East Bengal on June 22, 1992, and played for 27 minutes six days later as a substitute forward in an exhibition match against arch-rivals Mohun Bagan.

Bhaichung Bhutia honoured with "identifying and nurturing the icon' award, while former India captains, Manoranjan Bhattacharya and Bhaskar Ganguly have given Lifetime Achievement awards.

The club also honoured legendary PK Banerjee with the 'Coach of coaches' award, while Laldanmawia Ralte was given 'Best Footballer of the Year' award.

1. Senior IAS officer Rajiv Kumar appointed as new Finance Secretary

Senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Rajiv Kumar(1984 batch- Jharkhand cadre) has been appointed as the new Finance Secretary.

The approval was given by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He succeeded Subhash Chandra Garg (1983 batch IAS- officer), who is currently the power secretary.

Currently, Mr Rajiv Kumar is serving as Secretary in the Department of Financial Services.

1. Anandiben Patel takes oath as Governor of Uttar Pradesh

Anandiben Patel (77-years) took oath as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh.

The Chief Justice of the High Court, Govind Mathur, administered herthe oath of Office and Secrecy at Raj Bhawan in Lucknow.

On the 20th of this month, President Ram Nath Kovind had appointed Anandiben Patel as the new Governor of Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier, she was serving as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh.

Ms Patel will be the second woman Governor of the state after Sarojini Naidu.

Note:

The governors (exist in the states) and lieutenant-governors/administrators (union territories and in the NCT of Delhi) of the states and union territories of India have similar powers and functions at the state level as that of the President of India at Union level.

The governor acts as the nominal head whereas the real power lies with the Chief ministers of the states and his/her councils of ministers.

1. IPS officer VK Johri appointed as new BSF DG

IPS officer VK Johri (1984-batch - Madhya Pradesh cadre) has been appointed as the next Director-General (DG) of Border Security Force (BSF).

He will succeed Rajni Kant Misrawho retires on 31st of July 2019.

Currently, Mr. Johri is serving as the Special Secretary in RAW, under the Cabinet Secretariat.

Note:

The BSF is the country's largest border guarding force (present strength of about 2.5 lakh personnel) and is tasked to secure two of India's most important and sensitive fronts with Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The two other border guarding forces are ITBP (China) and SSB(Nepal and Bhutan).
