Global Innovation Index 2019 Highlights

About

The report is jointly released by World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Cornell University and INSEAD. The theme for this year’s edition is “Creating Healthy Lives – The Future of Medical Innovation”. The report ranked 129 economies based on 80 indicators.

Key Highlights

Switzerland continues to be the World’s most innovative country for the second consecutive yearfollowed by Sweden and the United States.

This is the first time that the GII report has been launched in Asia or in emerging economy.

There has been an important shift in the last decade in the global landscape of science, technology and innovation.

There has been an increase in the contribution to the global R&D by the Middle-income countries.

The public R&D expenditure in some of the high-income economies is growing slowly which has raised concerns as these are the key to future innovations.

The risk has been posed by increasing protectionism and thus need to be contained and if not may lead to slowdown in the growth of innovation productivity.

Very few economies are still concentrating the innovation input and output.

Majority of Science and Technology clusters are found in US, China and Germany.

The top 5 clusters are:

Tokyo-Yokohama (Japan)

Shenzhen-Hong Kong (China)

Seoul (South Korea)

Beijing (China)

San Jose-San Francisco (US)

Performance of India

India has been ranked 52nd in this year’s ranking which is a jump of 5 places over the last year.

Also it has been able to improve its ranking by 29 since 2015 where it was ranked 81st which is the biggest jump by any major economy.

This has been possible due to high quality scientific publications and universities.

The country has been able to maintain top rank in productivity growth and exports of services related to ICT.

The country also featured in top Science and Technology clusters which includes Bangalore, Mumbai and New Delhi in top 100.
