UPI transactions grow 44% to ₹15-lakh crore in July

  • Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions in July 2023 have grown 44% to ₹15.34-lakh crore.
  • UPI transactions in July 2023 reached a record high level both in terms of volume and value.
  • It has grown 4% month over month (m-o-m) and 44% year on year (y-o-y).

Key Highlights :

  • The number of transactions in July 2023 reached a record high level of 996 crore.
  • The number was higher by 6.6% from the previous month and 58% compared to July 2022, according to National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data.
  • The number of monthly transactions reached beyond the 900-crore in May 2023.
  • The growth in the volume of UPI transactions has been above 50% y-o-y.
  • According to the RBI’s annual report for 2022-23, UPI-led retail digital payments have shown a growth at a CAGR of 50% in volume and 27% in value between FY17 and FY22.
  • As per a report by PwC India, UPI transactions are likely to breach 100 crore transactions per day by FY27.

Star Health inks ‘strategic corporate alliance’ with Standard Chartered Bank to offer its insurance products

  • Private sector health insurance provider Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Ltd has signed a “strategic corporate bancassurance” with Standard Chartered Bank to provide its insurance products to customers.
  • The partnership is to provide health insurance solutions across 100 branches of the private bank present in 42 cities across the country.
  • Customers now require comprehensive policies that cater to their medical requirements, encompassing benefits such as OPD Care, Hospi Cash, and Critical Illness covers.
  • According to the Standard Chartered’s Wealth Expectancy Report for 2022 revealing that over 54% of respondents in India have prioritised health and wellness post the pandemic.”

RBI fines ONGC Videsh, Indian Oil, GAIL and Oil India for late reporting of overseas investments

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed late submission fees (LSF) of ₹2,000 crore on ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL), Indian Oil Corp. Ltd, GAIL (India) Ltd, and Oil India Ltd for delayed reporting of their overseas investments.
  • RBI has imposed a late submission fee of ₹500 crore each on them for delayed reporting of their overseas investments.
  • State Bank of India (SBI) is the authorised dealer bank for the foreign transactions of these PSUs.
  • The PSUs are trying to get time from the RBI to avoid any disruption in operations and for the smooth functioning of their overseas subsidiaries.
  • According to RBI’s Foreign Exchange Management (Overseas Investment) Regulations, 2022, those failing to submit investment evidence within the stipulated time frame can do so with late submission fees.

TRAI releases recommendations on ‘Introduction of Digital Connectivity Infrastructure Provider Authorization under Unified License (UL)’

  • Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued its recommendations on ‘Introduction of Digital Connectivity Infrastructure Provider Authorization under Unified License (UL)’.
  • National Digital Communications Policy (NDCP-2018) emphasizes digital infrastructure stating that “Digital infrastructure and services are increasingly emerging as key enablers and critical determinants of a country’s growth and well-being”.
  • Digital Connectivity Infrastructure (DCI) is essential for the growth of the global data economy.
  • A robust DCI contributes significantly to economic development both by increasing productivity and by providing amenities that enhance the quality of life.
  • DCI plays a vital and leading role in the successful implementation of various Government schemes under Digital India, Make in India, Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), and the development of Smart Cities.
  • DCI’s growth drivers include the commercialization of 5G, increasing demand for internet and cloud infrastructure, and the proliferation of IoT sensors and devices as well as private LTE networks, among others.

3rd G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group Meeting and G20 Anti-Corruption Ministerial Meeting will be held in Kolkata

  • The third and final meeting of the G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) under India’s Presidency will be held from 9 to 11 August 2023 in Kolkata.
  • Over 154 delegates from G20 Members, 10 invitee countries, and various international organizations will be attending the meeting.
  • It will be followed by the G20 Anti-Corruption Ministerial Meeting on 12th August 2023, which will be chaired by Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Science and Technology, Minister of State for the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the Department of Atomic Energy and the Department of Space of Government of India.
  • This will be the second-ever Ministerial meeting of G20 ACWG and the first in-person ACWG Ministerial meeting.
  • The deliberations at the level of Ministers will impart a further political impetus to combatting corruption as ACWG plays a crucial role in leading international efforts to combat corruption.
  • Under India’s G20 presidency, ACWG has been able to achieve significant progress on anti-corruption cooperation regarding action against fugitive economic offenders and return of assets, guided by the Nine Point Agenda for Action Against Fugitive Economic Offences and Asset Recovery, presented by Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to G20 nations in 2018.

Centre for Trade and Investment Law at IIFT, celebrates its 6th Anniversary

  • The Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL), established by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi celebrated its 6th anniversary and released the Sixth Anniversary issue of CTIL Magazine in New Delhi.
  • The event was graced by Attorney General of India, Shri R. Venkataramani; Secretary, Department of Commerce, Shri Sunil Barthwal; Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, Shri Peeyush Kumar and Vice-Chancellor, IIFT, Prof. Satinder Bhatia.
  • The event marked six years of the foundation of CTIL.

21-day nationwide Meri Mati Mera Desh campaign to honour martyred brave hearts launch

  • The nationwide Meri Mati Mera Desh Campaign will be launched to pay tribute to the Bravehearts who laid down their lives for the country.
  • The campaign will continue till the 30th of August.
  • It will include programmes at national, state, village and block levels as well as local urban bodies.
  • The campaign will feature programmes like the establishment of memorial plaques or Shilaphalakams dedicated to freedom fighters and security forces, as well as initiatives like Panch Pran Pledge, Vasudha Vandan, Veeron ka Vandan which venerates the gallant sacrifices of Bravehearts.
  • Under the campaign an ‘Amrit Kalash Yatra’ will also be conducted, carrying soil from all corners of the country in 7,500 Kalash to create an ‘Amrit Vatika’ in Delhi.
  • This ‘Amrit Vatika’ will symbolize the commitment to ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.
  • The campaign is the concluding event of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav which began on 12th March 2021 and has witnessed widespread public participation, with over two lakh programs organized across India.

Parliamentary Standing Committee recommends mandatory declaration of assets by Supreme Court and High Court judges

  • Parliamentary Committee has recommended bringing legislation to make it mandatory for Supreme Court and High Court judges to declare their property returns on an annual basis.
  • The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice, in its report ‘Judicial Processes And Their Reforms’, said that as a general practice, all constitutional functionaries and government servants must file annual returns of their assets and liabilities.
  • The Committee recommended that the Union government bring about appropriate legislation to make it mandatory for judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts to furnish their property returns on an annual basis to the appropriate authority.
  • It said that the declaration of assets by the judges of the higher judiciary will only bring more trust and credibility into the system.

Dr P.K. Mishra chaires 7th meeting of the Coordination Committee on India’s G20 Presidency in New Delhi

  • Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Dr P.K. Mishra chaired the seventh meeting of the Coordi Nation Committee on India’s G20 Presidency at Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
  • The meeting covered the Summit preparedness in substantive as well as logistical aspects.
  • Progress and outcomes on both Sherpa and Finance tracks were reviewed.
  • A discussion was held on the Indian Presidency’s priorities including Green Development, accelerating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), strong sustainable balanced, inclusive growth, digital public infrastructure, gender equality and reform of multilateral institutions.
  • The Sherpa, Amitabh Kant informed that so far, a total of 185 meetings including 13 at the Ministerial level have been concluded covering almost all States and Union Territories in the country.
  • Besides, 12 outcome documents, 12 other deliverables with consensus have been adopted.
  • Secretary, Information and Broadcasting, Apurva Chandra briefed about the arrangements for media, like setting up of media centre and media accreditation. So far, more than 3,200 media personnel have registered for the Summit.

  • In a major push to Indian students and alumni, France has announced new initiatives to bolster academic excellence, cultural understanding, and long-lasting friendship between the two nations.
  • This comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited France as Chief Guest on the country’s Bastille Day.
  • An official release from the French Embassy said President Emmanuel Macron announced France’s goal to welcome 30,000 students from India by 2030.
  • It further said, Indian students with a French Master’s degree also have the opportunity to work and explore professional alternatives in France during their two-year post-study work visa.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren summoned by Enforcement Directorate in connection with land scam case

  • The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned the Chief Minister of Jharkhand Hemant Soren in the alleged land scam case.
  • The central probe agency has asked the Chief Minister to appear before its Ranchi office on 14th August.
  • Earlier, the ED had summoned the Chief Minister in November 2022.
  • The agency questioned Mr Soren for more than 10 long hours in connection with the illegal mining case on November 18, 2022.
  • Meanwhile, suspended IAS officer and former Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi, Chhavi Ranjan, including many businessmen have been arrested and sent to jail by ED in this case.

Director General, BSF, Nitin Agrawal visits International Border in Samba, Jammu

  • Director General, of Border Security Forces (BSF), Nitin Agrawal visited the International Border in the Samba district of Jammu division.
  • He was briefed about the alertness of the troops to thwart drone and smuggling activities from Pakistan.
  • Akashvani Jammu Correspondent reports, Mr Agrawal arrived at the Jammu frontier headquarters of the BSF on a three-day visit to review the security scenario along the International Border in the Union Territory.
  • The BSF chief was given a detailed presentation covering all critical aspects of border security and domination along the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC) by the Inspector General, BSF Jammu Frontier.

Haryana Government extends temporary suspension of mobile Internet services in Nuh district:

  • The Haryana Government has extended the temporary suspension of mobile Internet services in Nuh district till 11th August.
  • An official spokesperson said the measure has been taken to stop the spread of disinformation and rumours through various social media platforms, such as Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, etc. on mobile phones and SMS.
  • All telecom service providers of Haryana have been directed to ensure the compliance of this order and any person found guilty of the violation of the aforesaid order will be liable for legal action under relevant provisions

The Haryana government planning to build a dam for 6,134 crore rupees

  • The Haryana government is planning to build a dam for 6,134 crore rupees.
  • It will have a 14-km-long reservoir and will be built 4.5 km upstream from the Hathnikund Barrage in Yamunanagar district.
  • Once the project is completed, the state will have greater availability of irrigation water, groundwater recharge, and aquaculture, apart from the generation of 250 MW of electricity.
  • Its reservoir will have a capacity of 10.82 lakh cusecs.
  • This is likely to prevent floods caused by the Yamuna in Delhi and adjoining areas of the river in Haryana.
  • The dam area also shares borders with Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
  • Last month the Chief Minister informed that the proposal to construct a dam behind the Hathnikund Barrage is being taken up with the Himachal government.
  • He said that it will help to check the floods caused by excessive rains.

  • The Flag Officer is an alumnus of the National Defence College, New Delhi, and Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.
  • The Flag Officer is specialised in Navigation & Direction and his sea commands include all major vessels of ICG which include Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel Samar and Offshore Patrol Vessel Vishwast.
  • His key staff assignments include Dy Director General (Operations & Coastal Security), Principal Director (Operations) at the Coast Guard Headquarters, New Delhi, and Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at the Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (East), Chennai.
  • He is a recipient of the President’s Tatrakshak Medal for Distinguished Service, Tatrakshak Medal and was also awarded the Director General Coast Guard Commendation in 2012 and FOCINC (East) Commendation in 2009.

  • Russia has announced that it planned to launch a lunar lander this week after several delays, hoping to return to the Moon for the first time in over 50 years.
  • Russia’s space agency Roscosmos said, the Luna-25 lander would be launched in the early hours.
  • The launch is the first mission of Moscow’s new lunar programme, and it comes as President Vladimir Putin seeks to boost space collaboration with China after relations with the West deteriorated following the start of Moscow’s attack in Ukraine last year.

India develop the manned scientific submersible MATSYA6000

  • India has developed a manned scientific submersible MATSYA6000.
  • It can carry three humans for a period of 12 hours up to a depth of 60,000 meters in the ocean for deep sea mining and manned submersible.
  • Union Minister of Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju said that an integrated mining machine has been developed for exploratory mining of poly-metallic nodules from the sea bed and a demonstration of locomotion trial was conducted at Central India Ocean.
  • He further added that under the Deep Ocean Mission, significant progress has been made in the development of the technology for deep-sea mining.

  • The proposed combination pertains to the acquisition by the Acquirers, collectively, of equity shares comprising approx. 90% of the shareholding and voting rights of HDFC Credila by way of purchase by each Acquirer of equity shares from HDFC Limited as well as a subscription by each Acquirer to equity shares of HDFC Credila (Proposed Combination)
