Indian Banks get ₹5,729 crores from Depositor Education and Awareness fund (DEAF) to refund unclaimed deposits
- The Union minister of State for finance, Shri Bhagwat Kisanrao Karad announced that Indian banks have received ₹5,729 crores from the “Depositor Education and Awareness” (DEA) Fund to facilitate the refund of unclaimed deposits in the last 5-years.
- The “Depositor Education and Awareness Fund Scheme, 2014“, which was issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), outlines regulations pertaining to unclaimed deposits and details the usage of the fund, including its role in promoting depositors‘ interests and supporting specified purposes.
- Dr Karad stated that RBI has taken various steps to reduce the quantum of unclaimed deposits and return such deposits to rightful claimants.
- Banks are, inter-alia, advised to –
- display the list of unclaimed deposits which are inactive/inoperative for 10 years or more on the bank’s websites;
- find the whereabouts of the customers and their legal heirs to return unclaimed deposits to the rightful claimants;
- formulate board approved policy on classification of unclaimed deposits;
- put in place a grievance redressal mechanism for quick resolution of complaints, record keeping, and periodic review of unclaimed deposit accounts.
- RBI has announced to set-up a Centralised Web portal for the public to search unclaimed deposits across multiple banks.
- RBI has also launched campaign “100 Days 100 Pays” for banks to trace and settle top 100 unclaimed deposits of every bank in every district of the country within 100 days, commencing from June 2023 to September 2023

PhonePe introduces an Income Tax Payment feature on its app
- PhonePe, a digital payments platform, has partnered with PayMate, a leading digital Business-to-business (B2B) payments and service provider, to allow users to pay their income tax on the PhonePe app called “Income Tax Payment”.
Aim:
- To allow taxpayers to pay self-assessment and advance tax directly from the app using Unified Payments Interface (UPI) or credit card payments.
Key Highlights :
- This eliminates the need to log in to the tax portal, creating a seamless and efficient experience for taxpayers.
- Users can choose to pay their taxes using their credit card or UPI.
- With credit card payments, users also get a 45-day interest-free period and earn reward points on their tax payments, depending on their bank.
- After the completion of the payment, taxpayers will receive a Unique Transaction Reference (UTR) number as a proof of tax payment.
- The UTR will be available within a day, whereas the challan is generated within 2 working days.

HDFC Mutual Fund Launched Charity Fund For Cancer Cure
- HDFC Asset Management Company (HDFC AMC), investment manager to HDFC Mutual Fund (HDFC MF), has launched the HDFC Charity Fund for Cancer Cure in partnership with the Indian Cancer Society (ICS).
- The donated amount will be used for the treatment of underprivileged cancer patients.
- It is a closed-ended income scheme and a fixed maturity plan with a tenure of 1,196 days.
- The new fund offer (NFO) will open on July 28, 2023 and close on August 8, 2023.
- This NFO marks the 4th edition of the cancer cure series that started in 2011.

- The HDFC Charity Fund for Cancer Cure provides investors with an opportunity to contribute to a noble cause while combining their investments with philanthropy.
- Investors have the flexibility to choose between 50% and 75% contribution of IDCW to ICS.
- These donations will be eligible for deduction under Section 80G of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (under the old regime).
- Upon receiving donations, the Indian Cancer Society will issue 80G certificates to investors based on their respective contributions.
- HDFC AMC will match the donations made by investors with an equal amount, up to a limit of 16 crore per financial year.
- Additionally, the AMC has waived all investment management and advisory fees for this scheme, thus ensuring that maximum benefits go towards supporting cancer patients in need.

South Eastern Coalfields Ltd to invest Rs 169 crores on plantation in MP & Chhattisgarh
- Chhattisgarh-based Coal India subsidiary, South Eastern Coalfields (SECL), will invest Rs. 169 crores on a plantation in its operating States of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh during the next five years.
- The company has recently signed MoU with Chhattisgarh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (CGRVVN) and Madhya Pradesh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (MPRVVN) for carrying out plantation work in these States.
- The plantation will be carried out for a period of five years from 2023-24 to 2027-28 with its subsequent maintenance of 4 years for each consecutive year of the plantation.
- As per the MoU, SECL will spend Rs. 131.52 crore in Chhattisgarh and Rs. 38.11 crore in Madhya Pradesh for plantation work.
- The company in partnership with the state nigams will plant more than 26 lakh saplings in the state of CG and almost 12 lakh saplings in MP.
- This is the third such MoU by the company.
- Through the previous two MoUs, the company has planted more than 46 lakh saplings in CG and more than 16 lakh plants in MP between 2013-14 and 2022-23 at a total cost of more than Rs 168 crores.

- The latest change is one in a series Musk has carried out since buying Twitter for $44 billion last year.
- Musk’s Twitter purchase and rebranding effort are seen as steps toward his stated plans to create what he has called an “everything app.”

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced India’s UPI to be used in France soon
- In a significant move, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced the launch of the Unified Payments System (UPI) in France.
- To make it an iconic move, the countries have decided to start its operations from the Eiffel Tower, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site where Indian tourists will now be able to pay in rupees.
- This move will allow Indian tourists to make rupee payments using UPI while in France.
- The announcement is seen as a significant development for bilateral trade and tourism between India and France.
- With this development, France became the first European country to have UPI.
- Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is India’s mobile-based payment system and allows people to make round-the-clock payments through a virtual payment address created by the customer.
Key Highlights :
- It is to be noted that the National Payments Corporation Of India’s (NPCI) international arm, NPCI International Pvt Ltd (NIPL), had signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lyra Network of France for acceptance of UPI and RuPay Cards in the country back in 2022.
- It is to be noted that in 2023, UPI and Singapore’s PayNow had signed an agreement, allowing users in either country to make cross-border transactions.
- PM Modi along with his Singapore counterpart Lee Hsien Loon witnessed the launch of UPI-PayNow collaboration to enable cross-border remittances.
- Apart from these two countries, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bhutan, and Nepal have already adopted the UPI payment system.

As per the National Coal Index, coal production witnessed a decline of 33.8% in May this year.
- In May 2023, the National Coal Index (NCI) dropped significantly by 33.8%, reaching 157.7 points.
- This is in contrast to May of last year when it was at 238.3 points.
- The decline suggests that there is currently an ample supply of coal in the market to meet the increasing demand.
- For May 2023, the NCI for non-coking coal is at 147.5 points, indicating a 34.3% decline from May 2022. Meanwhile, the coking coal index for May 2023 stands at 187.1 points, with a decline of 32.6%.
- The highest point for NCI was noted in June 2022, reaching 238.8 points.
- However, subsequent months have seen a decrease, which implies that there is an abundance of coal available in the Indian market.
- The National Coal Index (NCI) is a reliable price index that combines coal prices from all sales channels, including notified prices, auction prices, and import prices.
- Established with the base year of fiscal year 2017-18, it provides valuable insights into coal price fluctuations and serves as a dependable indicator of market dynamics.
- Furthermore, the premium on coal auctions is an indicator of the industry’s condition, and the sharp decline in coal auction premiums confirms that there is enough coal available in the market.

CMA Neeraj Joshi Elected as Institute Of Cost Accountants Of India’s Central Council Member
- City-based Cost & Management Accountant (CMA) Neeraj Joshi has been elected as the Central Council Member (CCM) of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) and CMA Chaitanya Moharir elected as the Western India Regional Council Member (RCM).
- This is the second time that Joshi & Moharir represented Pune at the central and regional council.

China names Pan Gongsheng as Governor of China’s central bank
- Pan Gongsheng was named China’s central bank governor in the widely anticipated final major appointment of the ruling Communist Party’s once-a-decade change of power.
- Pan, 60, was appointed by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee replacing Yi Gang, an American-trained economist who reached the official retirement age of 65.
- The endorsement of Pan’s promotion by the ceremonial legislature, the National People’s Congress, follows other Cabinet-level appointments announced in March, 2023.

- The Pan Gongsheng appointment marks the first time since 2018 that the top two positions at the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) – governor and Communist Party secretary will be held by oen person, potentially streamlining decision-making at the very top.
- Former governor Zhou Xiaochuan held both posts until his departure in 2018, when Yi Gang was named governor and Guo Shuqing held the position of party chief.

- The President of India Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya from the Allahabad High Court (HC) as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
- The position of Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court had been vacant since the retirement of CJ RD Dhanuka on May 30, 2023.
- Justice Upadhyaya’s name was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, on July 6, 2023.
- Currently, the Bombay HC, which has a sanctioned strength of 94 judges, is functioning with 66 judges, including 40 permanent and 26 additional judges.

- In a historic move, Chairman, Rajya Sabha, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar has nominated 4 women Parliamentarians namely PT Usha, S. Phangnon Konyak, Dr. Fauzia Khan, and Sulata Deo to the panel of Vice-Chairpersons.
- It is also noteworthy that all women members nominated to the panel are first term Parliamentarians and S. Phangnon Konyak is the first ever woman from Nagaland to be elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
- The panel reconstituted before the Monsoon Session contains a total of 8 names, out of which half (4) are women.
- V Vijayasai Reddy, Ghanshyam Tiwari, Dr. L. Hanumanthaiah, and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray have also been nominated to the panel of Vice-Chairpersons.
Aim of the move :

Italy Honours Indian Army contribution in second World War
- Remembering the supreme sacrifices by the Indian Soldiers, the Commune of Monotone (in Italy) and Italian Military historians have unveiled “C Yeshwant Ghadge Sundial Memorial” at Montone (Perugia, Italy), as a tribute to the Indian troops who fought during Italian Campaign during the Second World War, and to honour Naik Yeshwant Ghadge, Victoria Cross, who was killed in action fighting on the heights of Upper Tiber Valley.
- Dr Neena Malhotra, Ambassador of India in Italy and the Indian Defence Attaché represented India during the ceremony.
- A large number of Italian citizens, distinguished guests and members of the Italian Armed Forces also graced the occasion.
Key Highlights :
- In order to make this memorial a participative endeavor, an Indian Army plaque has been placed at the memorial commemorating the gallant sacrifice of all ranks of the Indian Army who fought in the Italian Campaign.
- The memorial is in the form of a live Sundial.
- The motto of the memorial is “Omines Sub Eodem Sole” which translates in English as “We all live under the same sun“.
- Inauguration of this Memorial honouring the contributions during the Italian Campaign is a testimony to the fact that Italy holds in high reverence the supreme sacrifices and contributions by the Indian Soldiers during the Italian Campaign of the Second World War.
- Indian Soldiers played a central role in the Italian Campaign during the Second World War, wherein more than 50,000 Indian Army soldiers from the 4th, 8th and 10th Divisions took part.
- Out of the 20 Victoria Crosses awarded in Italy, 6 were won by Indian soldiers.
- Indian soldiers suffered 23,722 casualties, of which 5,782 Indian soldiers made the supreme sacrifice, and are commemorated in the 40 Commonwealth War Graves spread all over Italy.

SpaceX Successfully Launched 22 Starlink V2 ‘Mini’ Satellites into Low Earth Orbit
- The Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, commonly referred to as SpaceX launched 22 Starlink V2 ‘Mini’ satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) from Space Launch Complex 40 at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, the United States of America (USA).
- The Falcon 9’s first stage came back down to Earth for a landing about 5 minutes after liftoff as planned.
- It touched down on the SpaceX drone ship Just Read the Instructions, which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.
- According to a SpaceX mission description, it was the sixth launch and landing for this particular booster.
- The spacecraft were deployed there on schedule, about 65 minutes after launch.
Key Highlights :
- Until now, Spacecraft has launched more than 4,850 Starlink craft to LEO in total.
- The V2 Minis feature enhanced technologies, including more powerful phased array antennas and the use of E-band for backhaul.
- This allows each satellite to offer approximately four times more capacity than their predecessors.
- As a result, the upgraded Starlink network promises increased bandwidth, higher reliability, and will connect millions more people globally with high-speed internet.
- The Falcon 9 first stage used in this mission, known as B1076-6, has flown a total of six times.
- It previously supported missions for National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), OneWeb, Intelsat, and now 3 Starlink missions.

The organization NADA has introduced a helpline number 1800-119-919 for athletes to receive information regarding Anti-Doping regulations and guidelines
- The Union government has emphasized that ethical conduct is a key factor in the fair administration of the sporting disciplines and facilitates a safe environment free of harassment and discrimination for all stakeholders participating in sports.
- Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said this in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha and the government is committed to eradicating doping and drug abuse by sportspersons.
- He said, National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has launched an Anti-Doping helpline number for the athletes and athlete support personnel to provide information about Anti-Doping rules and guidelines.
- The helpline number is 1800-119-919.
- The Minister also informed that woman coaches will be a mandatory part of any contingent with female athletes during domestic and international camps and competition exposures.
