Reserve Bank of India tightens norms for ARCs on income recognising fee             

  • As a step to curb asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) from breaching income recognition norms, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stated that ARCs will deduct amounts from net-owned funds while calculating the Capital Adequacy Ratio.
  • They will have to deduct these amounts from the amount available for payment of dividends as well.
  • After implementing Indian Accounting standards (Ind AS), some ARCs have been recognising management fees even though the fee had not been realised for more than 180 days.
  • ARCs preparing financial statements as per Ind AS, will have to deduct the Management fee recognised during the planning period that remains unrealised beyond 180 days from the date of expiry of the planning period.
  • They will have to reduce unrealised management fees where the net asset value of the Security Receipts has fallen below 50% of the face value.

  • Bharti AXA Life Insurance, announced its bancassurance partnership with Unity Small Finance Bank (Unity Bank), a new-age, digital first bank for the distribution of life insurance products through the Bank’s network of 111 branches and 206 offices pan-India.
  • Unity Bank’s customers will benefit from a diverse range of new-age insurance solutions offered by Bharti AXA Life.

What is Bancassurance?

  • Bancassurance refers to the agreement between a bank and an insurance company through which the bank sells the insurance product of the concerned insurance company to its customers.
  • This partnership arrangement can be profitable for both companies.

SBI Introduced Amrit Kalash Deposit FD Scheme With Up To 7.6% Interest for Senior Citizens

  • India’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has launched a new retail term deposit scheme called Amrit Kalash Deposit.

About Amrit Kalash Deposit Scheme :

  • The Amrit Kalash Deposit is valid for customers from 15 February to 31 March 2023.
  • The scheme is launched for both domestic and Non-Resident Indian (NRI) customers
  • The interest rate of regular citizens is 7.10% while the interest rate of senior citizens is 7.60%.
  • The total tenure of the deposit scheme is 400 days.
  • For example, if they invest Rs 1 lakh in the SBI Amrit Kalash deposit scheme, after 400 days they will receive an interest of Rs 8,600.
  • premature loan facility is also available under the SBI Amrit Kalash deposit scheme.
  • There is an additional 1% return for pensioners and employees of SBI.

Other SBI fixed deposits schemes:

  • SBI increased the interest rates on fixed deposits or term deposits on sums under Rs 2 crore by 5 basis points to 25 basis points.

Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance launched ABSLI Nishchit Aayush Plan

  • Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance (ABSLI), the life insurance subsidiary of Aditya Birla Capital Limited (ABCL), has launched a new-age savings solution ABSLI Nishchit Aayush Plan.

About ABSLI Nishchit Aayush Plan :

  • The Plan is a non-linked non-participating individual savings life insurance plan offering guaranteed regular income starting as early as the end of the first policy month along with a lump-sum benefit at maturity.

Key Features :

  • The maximum entry age to avail ABSLI Nishchit Aayush Plan is 55 years, while the minimum age is 30 days (long term income option) and 30 years (whole life income).
  • The minimum annualised premium is 30,000.
  • Policyholders can choose from multiple premium payment term options ranging from 6, 8, 10, 12 years.

Benefits :

  • The benefits of this plan on a long-term basis (25, 30, 35, 40 years) or whole life basis (100 – Age at entry).
  • Policyholders will have maximum flexibility to customise their plans with a choice of income benefits, multiple income variants, premium payment terms, policy terms and deferment periods.

IMF rolls out nine-point crypto assets action plan

  • The International Monetary Fund laid out a nine-point action plan for crypto assets.
  • The action plan gives direction on how countries should handle crypto assets and urges them to not give legal tender to cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin.
  • The following are the 9 points:
  1. Safeguard monetary sovereignty and stability by strengthening monetary policy frameworks and do not grant crypto assets official currency or legal tender status.
  2. Guard against excessive capital flow volatility and maintain the effectiveness of capital flow management measures.
  3. Analyze and disclose fiscal risks and adopt unambiguous tax treatment of crypto assets.
  4. Establish legal certainty of crypto assets and address legal risks.
  5. Develop and enforce prudential, conduct, and oversight requirements for all crypto market actors.
  6. Establish a joint monitoring framework across different domestic agencies and authorities.
  7. Establish international collaborative arrangements to enhance supervision and enforcement of crypto asset regulations.
  8. Monitor the impact of crypto assets on the stability of the international monetary system.
  9. Strengthen global cooperation to develop digital infrastructures and alternative solutions for cross-border payments and finance.

  • Central American country El Salvador is the first country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender in 2021.

RBI imposes restrictions on 5 co-operative banks                                

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed restrictions on 5 cooperative banks due to their deteriorating financial condition.

List of 5 co-operative banks on which restrictions have been imposed

  • Due to the current liquidity position of the following banks, customers will not be able to withdraw funds from their accounts.
  1. HCBL Co-operative Bank, Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh)
  2. Adarsh Mahila Nagari Sahakari Bank Maryadit, Aurangabad (Maharashtra)
  3. Shimsha Sahakara Bank Niyamitha, Maddur, Mandya District in Karnataka
  • Customers from the following banks can withdraw up to 5,000.
  1. Uravakonda Co-operative Town Bank, Uravakonda, (Anantapur District, Andhra Pradesh)
  2. Shankarrao Mohite Patil Sahakari Bank, Akluj (Maharashtra)

Key Highlights :

  • The restrictions imposed on these co-operative banks will remain in effect for 6 months.
  • These banks cannot grant loans and make investments without prior approval of RBI.
  • These banks cannot incur any liability and transfer or dispose of any of their properties.
  • The eligible depositors of all 5 cooperative banks would be entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amount of his/her deposits up to Rs 5 lakh from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation.

Health Minister inaugurates Chintan Shivir on “Drugs: Quality regulation and Enforcement

  • Chintan Shivir on “Drugs: Quality Regulation and Enforcement” was inaugurated by health minister Mansukh Mandaviya.
  • The Chintan Shivir started at Kanha Shanti Vanam, 40 kilometres from Hyderabad.
  • Its objective is to review processes and implementation of policies and programmes related to drug quality and enforcement in the country.
  • During the meeting, ways and means for facilitating ease of doing business will also be recommended by reviewing transparency and compliance with Indian drug standards and regulatory capacities across states and centre.
  • Participants will also discuss global best practices.
  • Participants will also discuss the introduction of newer interventions like digital tools and clinical trial standards.
  • Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur along with the president of Shree Ramchandra Mission Heartfulness Daaji inaugurated International Sports Centre at the Kanha Shanti vanam, Hyderabad.

President inaugurate 14th Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav at Bikaner

  • 14th Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav was formally inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu.
  • The 14th edition of Sanskriti Mahotsav is being held in Bikaner, Rajasthan.
  • The Sanskriti Mahotsav is being organized at Dr. Karni Singh Stadium.
  • It is a 9-days long festival.
  • It is being organized for the first time in Rajasthan.
  • The festival started on 25 February 2023.
  • It will continue till 5 March 2023.
  • In the festival, about one thousand well-known artists from across the country will perform.
  • Sand sculpture, an exhibition based on crafts and other arts is also being organized as part of the festival.
  • The festival is aimed at preserving, promoting and popularizing the rich cultural heritage of the country

Govt Plans 10 ‘Clean Plant Centres’ To Boost Fruit Yield

  • In order to increase domestic production, the Center plans to establish 10 “Clean Plant Centers” as the demand for fruits like apple, avocado and blueberry has increased over time.
  • These centers will be set up under the ‘Atmanirbhar Clean Plant Program’, which was announced by the Finance Minister in the Union Budget 2023-24.
  • The 10 centres will be established for fruit crops like apple, walnut, almond, grapes, mango, pomegranate, etc., and will be fully funded by the Centre.
  • The centres will be implemented in a PPP mode in partnership with research organisations, agriculture universities and private sector partners.
  • The Clean Plant Centres will provide services of disease diagnostic, therapeutics, multiplying of plants and generation of mother plants.
  • The demand for imported planting material for various fruit plants has risen sharply over the years (for example, from 21.44 lakh apple plants in 2018 to 49.57 lakh imported in 2020).
  • The process of importing plants is very cumbersome, as the imported plants must be kept in quarantine for two years.
  • After the establishment of the Clean Plant Centres, this period will be reduced to six months.

About Atmanirbhar Clean Plant Program:

  • The Program will be launched with an outlay of 2,200 crores (in the next 7 years till 2030) to boost the availability of disease-free, quality planting material for high-value horticultural crops.
  • The programme will be anchored by the National Horticulture Board (NHB) which in turn will set up Clean Plant Centers across the country and ensure the global competitiveness of the Indian horticulture sector.

Centre approves renaming of Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved the renaming of Aurangabad city as “Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar” and Osmanabad city as “Dharashiv”.
  • Aurangabad derives its name from the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, while Osmanabad was named for a 20th-century ruler of the princely state of Hyderabad.
  • Chhatrapati Sambhaji, the eldest son of warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was the second ruler of the Maratha state founded by his father.
  • Sambhaji Maharaj was executed on Aurangzeb’s orders in 1689.
  • Dharashiv, the name of a cave complex near Osmanabad, dates back to the 8th century as per some scholars.
  • Approval has been given to name this city Dharashiv in his name.
  • The demand to rename the two cities was first raised in 1988 by Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray.

  • India Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 8th edition of the dialogue which will be held from 2 March to 4 March 2023 in New Delhi.
  • Its theme is “Provocation, Uncertainty, Turbulence: Lighthouse in the Tempest.
  • The 7th Raisina Dialogue was held from 25-27 April 2022 in New Delhi.

Key Highlights :

  • Prime Minister of Italy Ms Giorgia Meloni will be on a 2 day visit to India.
  • She will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and a high-powered business delegation.
  • During the visit, a business roundtable will be held on March 2, 2023.
  • It will be co-chaired by Antonio Tajan and Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal.
  • India and Italy are celebrating 75 years of establishment of diplomatic relations this year.
  • The last prime ministerial visit from Italy to India took place in October 2018.

  • Japan has approved JPY 30.755 billion or about Rs 1,728 crore for the project in Maharashtra and JPY 9.918 billion or around Rs 560 crore for developing the centre in Mizoram.

  • Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link Project aims to improve connectivity in Mumbai Metropolitan Region by connecting Mumbai with Navi Mumbai, thereby contributing to the mitigation of traffic congestion and promoting regional economic development.
  • This is a tranche-III loan for the project.
  • The project for the centre in Mizoram aims to improve access to cancer prevention, detection, and treatment as well as human resource development and research that support cancer control systems.

Kerala Temple Introduces Mechanical Elephant For Performing Rituals                              

  • In first, the Irinjadappilly Sri Krishna Temple in Kerala’s Thrissur district used a mechanical, life-like elephant for performing rituals.
  • For the first time, a Kerala temple used a ‘robotic elephant’ for performing rituals.
  • This was followed by a call taken by the temple to never keep or hire elephants or any other animals for rituals, festivities, or any other purpose, so People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India came up with the robotic elephant.

Key Highlights :

  • The name of the elephant was Raman.
  • The 11-foot-tall robotic elephant is made up of an iron frame and rubber coating weighing 800kg.
  • It has 5 powerful electric motors.
  • This initiative will support the rehabilitation of captive elephants.
  • This robot has been donated to Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple in Thrissur district by PETA India.
  • The robotic elephant can carry 5 persons at a time and the mahout.
  • The mechanised elephant was made by a group of artists in Thrissur.
  • The ‘elephant’ has been named ‘Irinjadappilly Raman’ and the ‘Nadayiruthal’ ceremony was conducted with the help of the robot.
  • The ‘Nadayiruthal’ ceremony is a ritual offered by elephants to the deity in Kerala temples.

NASA Appoints Dr Nicola Fox to Lead Agency’s first woman Science Directorate                                          

  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has picked a longtime solar scientist who heads its heliophysics division, Dr Nicola Fox to become the S. space agency’s science chief – the first woman named to serve in the role.
  • This will be the first time that a woman has led the space agency’s science division.
  • Fox will succeed Mr Thomas Zurbuchen, a Swiss-American astrophysicist who had led the directorate since 2016 & he retired in December 2022.
  • Sandra Connelly, formerly Zurbuchen’s deputy, has been leading the directorate in an acting capacity.

Roles & Responsibilities :

  • Fox will lead NASA’s science directorate, a unit with an annual budget of roughly $7 billion that oversees some of the agency’s best-known programs from the robotic hunts for past life on Mars to exploring distant galaxies with the James Webb Space Telescope.

  • In 2018,she was appointed as the head of the agency’s Heliophysics Division.
  • She was the lead scientist for the Parker Solar Probe mission studying the sun.

Indian-Origin MIT Professor Hari Balakrishnan Awarded Marconi Prize

  • The 2023 Marconi Prize has been awarded to Hari Balakrishnan, the Fujitsu Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
  • He is also the founder of Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT).
  • The Marconi Prize is the flagship award of the Marconi Society, given annually to innovators who have made significant contributions to increasing digital inclusivity through the advancement of information and communications technology.

Previous winners of the Marconi Prize

  • Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, and sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke.
  • Balakrishnan received his B.Tech degree from IIT Madras and his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley.
  • His graduate work at Berkeley won the 1998 ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award.

India to get civil aviation research centre by the end of 2023

  • The Civil Aviation Research Organisation, (CARO), a facility with advanced simulators being established in Hyderabad, will become fully operational by the end of 2023.
  • It will have labs to analyse cyber security threats, and facilitate aviation data management.

About CARO :

  • CARO, which is being established on a 20-acre plot within the Begumpet airport at a cost of 13 crore, will offer solutions in key areas in the civilian aviation sector in India.
  • Its foundation stone was laid by Suresh Prabhu, the then civil aviation minister, in July 2018, and was originally scheduled to be operational by May 2022.
  • A research facility is functioning in a limited way at Begumpet airport with employees of the Airports Authority of India (AAI)

Aim :

  • To promote in-house and collaborative research to cater AAI’s needs through the establishment of a world-class research infrastructure with advanced simulators and laboratory facilities.

Ministry of Rural Development and Meesho Sign MoU to Onboard Rural Women as Online Sellers

  • The Ministry of Rural Development and Meesho, one of India’s major online marketplaces, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to drive digital inclusion of all women registered under State Rural Livelihood Missions (SRLMs) and enable them to sell online.
  • The partnership will give impetus to Meesho’s ongoing efforts to onboard rural women entrepreneurs in various states and enable them to launch and grow their businesses online.
  • Over the last few months, Meesho has tied up with several government-run self-help groups (SHGs), such as Sanjeevini, Karnataka State Rural Livelihood Mission, and UMEED, Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihoods Mission.
  • Meesho will now work with the central government to facilitate this digitisation at scale, organising rural women as community institutions, ensuring their financial inclusion and helping them with market access.

  • LeBron James has confirmed his status as one of the most dominant NBA players in history after passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record.
  • The 38-year-old passed Abdul-Jabbar’s mark of 38,387 points.
  • But while Abdul-Jabbar took 1,560 games to record his total, James set his record in just over 1,400 appearances.
  • Michael Jordan has the most points per game in NBA history with 30.1.
  • James is fifth on that list with 27.1, just behind another active player, Kevin Durant (27.3).

  • The ‘World Book Fair’ in New Delhi is being organized from the 25th of feb to the 5th of march at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
  • Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has inaugurated the fair
  • France has been designated as the Guest of Honor country at the World Book Fair.
  • The theme of the ‘International Book Fair’ to be held in New Delhi for 2023 is “Elixir of Freedom”, to celebrate and remember 75 years of India and its glorious past in honour of the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.
  • The fair is organized by the National Book Trust, India, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education, Government of India in collaboration with India Trade Promotion Organisation.

World Wildlife Day: 3rd March

  • World Wildlife day 2023 is celebrated on March 3rd, 2023.
  • World Wildlife Day 2023 theme is “Partnerships for wildlife conservation.”.
  • This aims to draw attention to the conservation of some of the most severely endangered species of Wild animals and plants.
  • It commemorates the day of the signature of the Convention on International Trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora.
  • Thailand proposed World Wildlife Day in the General Assembly of the UN on December 20, 2013, to create awareness among people about Worlds’ Wild animals and plants.
  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared March 3, at its 68th session the day of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

World Hearing Day: 3rd March

  • World Hearing Day is announced to be celebrated on March 3rd, 2023
  • World Hearing Day 2023 Theme is “Ear and hearing care for all! Let’s make it a reality.”
  • On World Hearing Day 2023, WHO will focus on the importance of safe listening as a means of maintaining good hearing across the life course.
  • It is possible to have good hearing across the life course through ear and hearing care.
  • In the late 1816’s Laurent Clerc helps to establish the earliest-recorded permanent institution for deaf students in the U. S.
  • In 1870 Hearing educators eliminate sign language and agreed to embrace oral teaching at the Second International Congress on Deaf Education in Milan, Italy.
  • World Health Organisation (WHO) create a holiday to raise awareness to avoid deafness in 2007 and the holiday was renamed from International Ear Careday to World hearing day in 2016.
