- The ‘food animal’ tag will become official once approved by a competent authority and published in the gazette.
- The FSSAI’s designation of the Yak as a food-producing animal will assist farmers in reaping financial benefits from rearing the animal and will open up numerous avenues of economic benefit for both farmers and food processors.
- Yaks have traditionally been raised through a rudimentary, unstructured, and difficult transhumance system.
- It is commonly expected that the FSSAI’s classification of the yak as a food animal will clear the way for commercial rearing and consumption of the yak using the NRC-Yak yak-rearing methodology.
