International Women’s Day: 8th March

  • International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8 to mark and celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and raise awareness about women’s equality, accelerate gender parity.
  • The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is: Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”
  • The aim of the day is to spread the message of gender equality and promote a better society where there is no gender bias
  • International Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1911.
  • The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day in the International Women’s Year, 1975. In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim March 8 as the UN Day for women’s rights and world peace.

RBI to observe Digital Payments Awareness Week (DPAW) from March 7-11, 2022:

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is going to observe Digital Payments Awareness Week (DPAW) between 7th March 2022 and 11th March 2022.
  • The theme of Digital Payments Awareness Week (DPAW) 2022 is: “Outreach and Availability of Digital Payments”.
  • RBI will be observed to celebrate the 17th Foundation Day of the Department of Payment and Settlement Systems (DPSS) on March 7 which is responsible for managing Payments Systems in India.

Ram Nath Kovind Presents Nari Shakti Puraskar 2020 and 2021:

  • The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Nari Shakti Puraskar – 2020 and 2021, at a special ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, on occasion of International Women’s Day.
  • The award was conferred on 29 outstanding and exceptional women achievers for the years 2020 and 2021.
  • Twenty-eight awards – (14 each for the Year 2020 and 2021)- were presented to 29 women in recognition of their exceptional work towards empowerment of women, especially the vulnerable and marginalised.
  • To acknowledge women’s achievements, the Ministry of Women and Child Development confers Nari Shakti Puraskar on women and institutions in recognition of their relentless service towards the cause of women empowerment and social welfare, and to celebrate women as game changers and catalyst of positive change in the society.
  • The award ceremony for the year 2020 could not be held in 2021 due to prevalent situation created by COVID-19 pandemic.

Petascale Supercomputer “PARAM Ganga” established at IIT Roorkee:

  • The National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) has now deployed PARAM Ganga, a supercomputer at IIT Roorkee, with a supercomputing capacity of 1.66 Petaflops.
  • The system is designed and commissioned by C-DAC under Phase 2 of the build approach of the NSM.
  • Substantial components utilized to build this system are manufactured and assembled within India along with an indigenous software stack developed by C-DAC, which is a step towards the Make in India initiative of the Government.
  • Availability of such a supercomputer will accelerate the research and development activities in multidisciplinary domains of science and engineering with a focus to provide computational power to user community of IIT Roorkee and neighbouring academic institutions.
  • This national Supercomputing Facility was inaugurated on March 07, 2022 by Shri B.V.R. Mohan Reddy, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Roorke.

Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Textiles to organise pan-India programme “Jharokha – Compendium of Indian handicraft/ handloom, art and culture”:

  • As part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Textiles are organizing “Jharokha-Compendium of Indian handicraft/ handloom, art and culture”.
  • It will be a PAN India celebration which will be held at 16 locations in 13 states and UTs.
  • Jharokha is a celebration of the traditional Indian handicrafts, handlooms, and art & culture. The first event under this celebration is being organized in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh starting from 8th March 2022 on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
  • It will be organized at Rani Kamlapati Railway Station which is named after the brave and fearless Queen Kamlapati of the Gond kingdom of Madhya Pradesh.

2,000 km of rail network will be brought under ‘Kavach’ in 2022-’23:

  • ‘Kavach’, the indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, will be deployed across the entire rail network beginning with 2,000 km in the 2022-23 fiscal and will be rolled out in 4,000 to 5,000 km every subsequent year, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
  • ‘Kavach’, which literally means armour, is being promoted by the Railways as the world’s cheapest automatic train collision protection system.
  • Announced in the 2022 Union Budget as a part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, 2,000 km of rail network is planned to be brought under ‘Kavach’ for safety and capacity augmentation in 2022-23.

MSME Ministry has launched “SAMARTH” Special Entrepreneurship Promotion Drive for Women:

  • The MSME Ministry has launched SAMARTH — a special entrepreneurship promotion drives for women.
  • Addressing the launch event, Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Narayan Rane, the MSME sector offers a plethora of opportunities for women.
  • Rane announced that the drive will help women to be self-reliant and independent by providing them with self-employment opportunities.
  • Under SAMARTH, 20 per cent seats in free skill development programmes, organised under skill development schemes of the ministry, will be allocated for aspiring and existing women entrepreneurs.
  • This will benefit more than 7,500 women in 2022-23.

Microsoft will set up India’s largest Data Center region in Hyderabad:

  • Tech giant Microsoft will be setting up its largest India data centre region in Hyderabad at an investment of over Rs 15,000 crore over a period of 15 years.
  • This makes Microsoft’s data centre investment the second largest foreign direct investment in Telangana after Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) $2.77 billion FDI in its second Asia Pacific data centre region in India after Mumbai.
  • The proposed Hyderabad data centre region will be Microsoft’s fourth in the country after Mumbai, Pune and Chennai.
  • Microsoft India president Anant Maheshwari said the new data centre region will augment Microsoft’s cloud capabilities and capacity to support those working across the country.
  • According to IDC, Microsoft’s data centre regions in India contributed $9.5 billion revenues to the economy between 2016 and 2020 and an estimated 1.5 million jobs were added to the economy including 1.69 lakh new skilled IT jobs.

BSE partners with Tamil Nadu govt’s M-TIPB to promote listing of MSMEs

  • Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has collaborated with the MSME Trade and Investment Promotion Bureau (M-TIPB), Government of Tamil Nadu, for promoting awareness among micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) of the state about the benefits of listing.
  • Through this association, M-TIPB will provide support in mobilising the SME representatives through district industries centres.
  • It will also help in mobilising state or regional associations to encourage their SME members to attend capacity building programmes.
  • The BSE will provide the capacity building and soft support to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Tamil Nadu for fulfilling listing requirements.

Additional Info :

  • The BSE was the first stock exchange in the country to launch the SME platform.
  • The SME platform started its journey in March 2012.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das launches UPI123Pay

  • On March 08, 2022, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das launched UPI for feature phones called UPI123Pay.
  • He also unveiled a 24×7 helpline for digital payments – DigiSaathi.

About UPI123Pay :

  • UPI (unified payments interface) ‘123PAY’ is a three-step method to initiate and execute services for users which will work on simple phones
  • It will allow customers to use feature phones for almost all transactions except scan and pay
  • Feature phone users will now be able to undertake a host of transactions based on four technology alternatives including IVR (interactive voice response) number, app functionality in feature phones, missed call-based approach and also proximity sound-based payments.

About ‘Digisaathi’ :

  • ‘Digisaathi’ will assist the caller’s/users with all their queries on digital payments via website and chatbot.
  • Users can visit digisaathi.info or call on 14431 and 1800 891 3333 from their phones for their queries on digital payments and grievances.

  • A Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is a smartphone application that allows users to transfer money between bank accounts.
  • It is a single-window mobile payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

IOB extends ₹1,000 cr loan to JKIDFC

  • PSU lender Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has sanctioned a loan of 1,000 crore to Jammu and Kashmir Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation Ltd (JKIDFC).
  • The bank has already disbursed ₹500 crore of the sanctioned amount.
  • The sanction is part of the Bank’s business plan to widen credit growth and funding infrastructure development across the nation.
  • Indian Overseas Bank is one of the First Public Sector Banks to lend to JKIDFC, which is incorporated to complete various projects belonging to various departments like Agriculture Production, Animal Husbandry, Housing & Urban Development, Industries & Commerce Department, Jal Shakti Department, Public Works Department, School Education Department etc.

Insolvency Regulator IBBI Signs MoU With IBA

  • Insolvency regulator IBBI and Indian Banks Association (IBA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on capacity building for financial creditors on topics related to insolvency, bankruptcy and related subjects.
  • The MOU was signed in the capital by Amit Pradhan, Executive Director, IBBI and Sunil Mehta Chief Executive.
  • The timely resolution of insolvency cases potentially impedes the value erosion of the assets of the corporate debtor and therefore, it is in the interest of all the stakeholders including Committee of Creditors (CoC) and Resolution Professionals / Interim Resolution Professionals (IRPs).

BE(A)WARE: RBI’s notice on modus operandi of financial frauds

  • The Reserve Bank of India released a booklet namely ‘BE(A)WARE’ on the common modus operandi used by fraudsters and precautions to be taken while carrying out various financial transactions.

Aim of the Booklet :

  • To enhance public awareness about various types of financial frauds perpetrated on gullible customers while carrying out digital payments and other financial transactions.
  • The booklet elaborates on safeguards against commonly used fraudulent techniques, such as, SIM swaps, vishing/phishing links, lottery, etc., including fake loan websites and digital apps.
  • Part A and B of the booklet detail the commonly observed modus operandi and precautions to be taken against fraudulent transactions relating to banks and non- banking financial companies (NBFCs).
  • Part C of the booklet explains the general precautions and digital hygiene to be followed by the public.
  • The final section contains a glossary of commonly used terminologies in performance of financial transactions with banks and other regulated entities of RBI to improve understanding thereof among the public.

JSW Energy unit signs power purchase agreement with HPPC

  • JSW Energy Ltd. announced its wholly-owned step down subsidiary JSW Energy Kutehr Ltd. has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Haryana Power Purchase Centre (HPPC) for supply of 240 MW hydro power.
  • The agreement is valid for 35 years (with further extension at mutually agreed terms).
  • The PPA signed at a levelised ceiling tariff of Rs 4.50 per kWh (kilowatt-hour).
  • The PPA capacity was selected through competitive bidding under Expression of Interest invited by the HPPC on July 3, 2018.

Additional Info :

  • JSW Energy Kutehr is currently constructing the 240 MW (3×80 MW) hydro-electric plant located in Kutehr, Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh.
  • JSW Energy has set a target for 50 percent reduction in carbon footprint by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 by transitioning towards renewable energy.

NIESBUD signs an MoU with MoRD for implementing the Start-up Village Entrepreneurship Programme

  • National Institute of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD), signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) to develop a sustainable model for promoting entrepreneurship at the grass roots by initiating the Start-up Village Entrepreneurship Programme (SVEP).

Aim :

  • To support entrepreneurs in rural areas to set-up enterprises at the village-level in non-agricultural sectors.

About the MoU :

  • The partnership will enable the rural community by helping them set up their trades and provide complete support till they are stabilized.
  • Under the partnership, rural entrepreneurs will be able to access banking systems for receiving financial support for starting their enterprises, including support from MUDRA bank.
  • Integrated ICT techniques and tools will also be provided for training and capacity building along with enterprise advisory services to augment the entrepreneurship ecosystem in India’s villages.

9th edition of India-Sri Lanka Naval Exercise SLINEX begins in Visakhapatnam

  • The 9th Edition of India – Sri Lanka Bilateral Maritime Exercise SLINEX (Sri Lanka India Naval Exercise) is scheduled at Visakhapatnam from 07 Mar to 10 Mar 2022.
  • The exercise is being conducted in two phases;
  1. Harbour Phase at Visakhapatnam on 07-08 Mar 22
  2. Sea Phase at Bay of Bengal on 09-10 Mar 22.
  • Sri Lanka Navy will be represented by SLNS Sayurala, an advanced offshore patrol vessel and the Indian Navy by INS Kirch, a guided missile corvette.

Aim :

  • To enhance interoperability, improve mutual understanding and exchange best practices and procedures for multi-faceted maritime operations between both navies.

NASA Begins Assembling Europa Clipper Spacecraft

  • NASA has started the assembly of a new spacecraft named Europa Clipper Spacecraft that will carry out the Europa clipper mission.
  • It has been designed and constructed by Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and most of its hardware is expected to be assembled before 2022.
  • The spacecraft has been designed to study Jupiter’s icy moon Europa in search of conditions suitable for supporting life.
  • The Europa Clipper spacecraft’s main body comprises a propulsion system that measures 10 feet tall (3-meters).
  • The spacecraft will be as large as an SUV and will be equipped with solar arrays long enough to span a basketball court.

  • The Europa Clipper mission, as mentioned above, is basically meant to scan Europa in search of signs of habitability.
  • Europa Clipper will orbit Jupiter and conduct multiple close flybys of Europa to gather data on the moon’s atmosphere, surface, and interior.

(NMDC), Country’s largest Iron Ore producer, a CPSE under Ministry of Steel received 1st prize in the Ispat Rajbhasha Award for 2018-19 and 2020-21 and the Ispat Rajbhasha Prerna Award for 2019-20 in the meeting of the Hindi Salahakar Committee of the Ministry of Steel held in Madurai on 3rd March 2022.
  • JSW Energy Ltd. announced its wholly-owned step down subsidiary JSW Energy Kutehr Ltd. has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Haryana Power Purchase Centre (HPPC) for supply of 240 MW hydro power.
  • National Institute of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD), signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) to develop a sustainable model for promoting entrepreneurship at the grass roots by initiating the Start-up Village Entrepreneurship Programme (SVEP).

  • NASA has started the assembly of a new spacecraft named Europa Clipper Spacecraft that will carry out the Europa clipper mission & it has been designed and constructed by Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) .
